TikTok LIVE offers a space for real-time expression and creativity, allowing creators to connect with their audience in an engaging way and co-create content. During a TikTok LIVE session, creators can interact with viewers through comments and questions. Additionally, LIVE offers creators economic opportunities through LIVE Gifts, the ability to get discovered by new viewers, and a way to foster community.
To go LIVE, you must be at least 18 years old, and your account must have a certain number of followers, which may vary by market. When you first start going LIVE, you may not have access to all the features LIVE has to offer. We encourage creators to familiarise themselves with our Community Guidelines, Creator Code of Conduct and in-app safety features. Over time, you'll be able to gain access to the full LIVE experience as long as you follow our safety policies.
Engaging with viewers in real-time is incredibly exciting, but it can feel like there's a lot to balance when you're first starting out. That's why we've prepared some well-being tips to help LIVE creators, LIVE community moderators and LIVE viewers customise your LIVE experience to support your unique well-being needs.
TikTok offers a number of tools to support your safety. You can view more resources for LIVE creators in TikTok's Creator Academy and find tips on how to safely share your story in our Safety Centre.
Be mindful that LIVE is broadcast in real time and cannot be edited during your stream. This differs from short video on TikTok, which can be edited before posting. Be prepared before going LIVE by reviewing the safety tips and features below:
Review the safety tips below about features available during your LIVE:
LIVE Safety Education Centre: Once you gain LIVE access, you'll be able to find feature-specific guidelines, detailed safety explainers, and information about any potential violations in the LIVE Safety Education Centre by going to Creator tools -> Rules and guidance -> LIVE Safety Education Centre.
LIVE Gifts: LIVE Gifts allow viewers who are 18+ (or 19 in South Korea) to react and show their appreciation for LIVE content in real-time. Creators have the option to turn this feature on or off depending on preferences. If you see someone sending Gifts and you think they're under 18, please report them.
LIVE Match: LIVE Match is an exciting 5 minute competition. Be mindful of language and behaviour during Matches to ensure they do not violate Community Guidelines.
LIVE Multi-Guests: The multi-guest feature allows creators to invite a limited number of guests to connect in audio or video mode during their LIVE session. Guests can be added or removed throughout. Viewers can also send requests to join as guests.
In a multi-guest LIVE, the host is responsible for content streamed in their LIVE and should avoid sharing a guests' content that violates our rules or does not meet our FYF standards. All guests must follow TikTok's Community Guidelines to avoid an ongoing LIVE session being closed down.
LIVE Comments: Creators have a number of tools to control comments and how users interact with their LIVE.
We encourage creators to use these tools to support a positive streaming experience and to help prevent violations of TikTok's Community Guidelines. After your LIVE is completed, you will have access to LIVE Replay for up to 30 days if you would like to review this material for any reason.
TikTok has a dedicated safety team that reviews and moderates LIVEs to help ensure community safety. However, it can be helpful to have real-time support from someone who knows your content and community. That's why creators can appoint a Community Moderator (*up to 30 moderators per LIVE) to help manage your stream and maintain a welcoming and positive experience.
During a LIVE, assigned community moderators can keep conversation flowing during quiet periods, and also have access to in-app tools that can maintain a safe experience and encourage positive engagement from viewers. If granted permissions, LIVE community moderators can also help creators manage comments, keyword filters, and can be given similar controls to creators including the ability to:
You can add moderators by tapping “Settings” on the right side of the launch screen and clicking into the option for moderators.
Note, you must be friends, or mutual followers to add a user as a moderator.
Before taking on the role of a LIVE Community Moderator, connect with the creator to understand their expectations and target audience, and ensure they have enabled moderator settings and permissions. Note that moderators can only use comment settings if they're granted comment permissions by the creator. Additionally, read through the LIVE Safety section on the Creator Portal as well as the creator tips outlined in this Guide.
As a LIVE viewer you have access to LIVE events, LIVE Q&As and LIVE Gifts. You can filter your search by topic to find the LIVE community of your interest. Be aware that some topics are not suitable for younger audiences under 18 and that your interactions during a livestream are public to all those who have access to the LIVE.
If we identify an emergency on LIVE with an imminent risk of real-world harm, we immediately notify local authorities or emergency services who can take appropriate actions. In line with industry best practices, we may additionally close the LIVE to viewers, while letting it continue privately for the creator. This protects viewers from potentially distressing content while allowing emergency services to gather crucial information that helps them respond to the situation.
Viewers 18 and older (or 19 in South Korea) have the ability to access Gifts. You can send Gifts as a way to show your appreciation for a creator's content. Be aware that when you send a Gift in a LIVE room, you do so publicly, so other users of LIVE (including the LIVE Creator) can see your handle ID and the image of the Gift that you send.
Visit TikTok's Help Centre to report a problem related to TikTok LIVE. For a LIVE host or moderator, tap the host image in the top left-hand corner and select the “Report” button. Alternatively, you can long press on the comment text to report.
You may also visit the Safety Centre to learn more about what happens after a report is submitted.
If you believe the livestream was wrongfully reported, the creator can submit an appeal to TikTok.
