Honoring veterans.

(5/2/25) President Donald Trump announced Thursday he wants to rename #VeteransDay, a federal holiday on Nov. 11, to "Victory Day for World War I" in a move to purportedly "start celebrating our victories again."
President Trump issued a proclamation Wednesday designating May 8 as a day for the U.S. to celebrate victory in World War II. “As we commemorate Victory Day for World War II, we offer our unending thanks to every patriot from the Greatest Generation who left behind his home and family to fight for our freedom in distant lands,” the president’s proclamation reads. “We honor the memories of all those who perished. Above all, we renew our commitment to keeping America and the entire world safe, secure, prosperous, and free.” Many cities in Europe — from London to Moscow — are holding parades this week to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies in 1945. “All over the globe, our World War II allies are celebrating this week, but the United States has never joined in with the proper celebration of our own. And the victory was mostly accomplished because of us, whether you like it or not,” he said in the Oval Office. President Trump has long complained that the U.S. doesn’t celebrate its victory in World War II like many other nations do despite its outsized role in ending the war. “We came into that war, and we won that war, and we had a lot of help from a lot of great people, a lot of great allies,” he said. “But I think there would be nobody that would say that we were not the dominant force in that war, and we don’t celebrate it.” The president is also expected to issue a proclamation later this year to designate Nov. 11 as a day to celebrate the end of World War I. President Woodrow Wilson declared Nov. 11 Armistice Day in 1919 to celebrate the end of the Great War, and the day was officially replaced by Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower. President Trump’s declarations though will not create new federal holidays, a power held by Congress. “We will not be closing the Country for these two very important Holidays … because we already have too many Holidays in America,” he wrote on Truth Social. “We were Workers then, and we are Workers now!” #trump #veday #worldwarii #worldwar2 #cspan
