A Jacksonville father is suing a Florida school district after his 17-year-old daughter, Kayleen Brown, died from a severe nut allergy. Kayleen collapsed into a coma and passed away on April 30, 2023, after eating baklava at her high school. According to the lawsuit, Kayleen, who had a known nut allergy, asked school staff if the baklava was nut-free and was told it was safe. After eating the dessert, she experienced an allergic reaction, but staff allowed her to leave campus without sending her to the nurse for evaluation. She later went to a pharmacy to buy Benadryl, but suffered anaphylaxis and cardiac arrest shortly afterward. The lawsuit alleges that the school district’s negligence led to Kayleen’s death, citing their knowledge of her allergy. Her father is seeking damages exceeding $50,000.
