CoQ10 can improve sperm parameters and function for male factor fertility.

It is an antioxidant used by mitochondria within our cells for many important processes.
For sperm – CoQ10 can decrease oxidative stress caused by a buildup of free radicals within the sperm cell that interfere with many sperm functions. Studies show improved sperm function and parameters with CoQ10 supplementation in men with male factor fertility.

Please see an excellent review of the literature by Salvio et al. in Antioxidants 2021 which includes 24 studies on CoQ10 and male factor fertility, including 7 randomized controlled trials.
Study design and impact vary but most studies saw improvement over 3 months of 200mg of COQ10 daily.

CoQ10 is available in 2 forms: reduced (ubiquinol) and oxidized (ubiquinone) – ubiqinol is the active form and the body can typically convert between both forms easily.

Be careful in choosing a supplement…

Marketing and brand recommendations can be confusing and intimidating with so many choices
– here are my recommendations:

Many people do not realize that the FDA does not regulate supplements like they do prescription medications. Supplements are not reviewed and approved by the FDA based on their safety and effectiveness before or after they go to market. In fact, standards for supplements made in Canada are much higher with testing before they go to market and postproduction testing checks. The purpose of third-party verification is to make sure what is in your supplements matches the label, and to make sure there are no contaminants - which is especially important for patients trying to conceive.

If you do want to buy a supplement made in the US – you can look for brands that voluntarily pay to have independent review and testing of their products with these labs and companies:
NSF international, US Pharmacopeia, UL Solutions, or Consumer Lab Seal.

Reminder: Supplements and vitamins cannot substitute for healthy choices in nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management.
