If you can count to 4, you can play drums: Learn drums in one minute

This is a one minute beginner drum lesson where you’ll learn how to play your first drum beat. This is arguably the easiest beat to play on drums, and the first groove most people learn.

You’ll start by counting to 4 and tapping along with your right hand (reverse all instructions if you’re left handed.) These are called 8th notes and you’ll be playing in a time signature called 4/4 (not important when you’re first learning).

Once you’re confortable with that, stomp your right foot/play the bass drum on the numbers 1 and 3.

Next you’ll play the snare drum on the numbers 2 and 4. Its best to practice these separately at first imo to get used to the feel of each, and to build muscle memory.

Lastly you’re going to sandwich those different elements together and play everything at the same time. It may be challenging at first but it wont take long for your brain to override the urge to play everything on the same beat, and it should start to feel natural.

Ive seen other lesson videos instructing you to play the bass drum on beat 1 and the snare on beat 3. While this will generally get you to the same place, it may lead to confusion if you learn to read music. Counting/playing that way is technically in half time. The method of counting in this video will ensure you’re on the correct path should you choose to persue music further.

You DON’T need a drum set to learn drums. Tapping on the toos of your legs in a seated position will 100% work as will air drumming. Thats loterally how I taught myself to play drums many years ago.

Replying to @je_te_4 One Minute Drum Lesson: How to play a half time shuffle

This is a basic half time shuffle tutorial. While the Jeff Porcaro “Rosanna” (Toto) shuffle is probably the most well known example, there are other rad versions of this groove that pre-date Rosanna. Go watch Jeff’s breakdown of this drum beat on YT. He talks about his inspirations for the Rosanna groove, as well as how to play it.

The first step to this drum beat is playing the hi hats on the first and last note of the triplet on each beat. You’ll then fill in the middle triplet on each beat with a ghost note on snare drum. After that, add the backbeat on beat 3 of each measure. Arguably the most challenging part of this groove is getting the note placement and dynamics of the ghost note that falls on the triplet directly after the backbeat consistent and feeling good. Lastly, you’ll add bass drum on beat 1 of each measure. Again, this is not a half time shuffle from any specific song, but rather a basic version of the groove that’s meant to help you master the core independence and dynamics behind the pattern. Once you get this down, learning other notable examples if this groove won’t be too difficult.

▶️ As always, when you are learning something new, whether it’s a drum groove, fill, practice pad exercise or linear pattern, remember to keep the TEMPO down until you are comfortable at the speed you are at. COUNT ALOUD before and during playing and keep notation in front of you to make sure what you're playing is correct. You are much better off getting the accuracy and timing CORRECT than you are playing it as fast as possible. I hope you got something out of this drum lesson!
