If your car seat came with harness pads, those are safe to use following the manual’s instructions! Be sure they are on top of the child’s shoulders and do not interfere with placing the chest clip at armpit level. For newborns or smaller babies, you might need to remove the harness pads until baby is a little bigger in order to achieve a proper chest clip position: consult your manual! Reminder: every single car seat manufacturer prohibits adding harness pads (and other inserts or accessories) that did not come with your seat! Please stop doing this! If I had a dollar for every post I’ve ever seen where a parent is super stressed about the movement of their installation, but they’re just not checking it correctly, I would be set for life. A properly installed car seat moves less than 1 inch side to side and front to back when checked at the belt path (NOT the head of the seat) with the force of a firm handshake! Also, the shoulder straps may not be effective in preventing ejection if your car seat has a chest clip & it’s not positioned where it should be. ‼️ And don’t forget to check for hidden slack around the hips! ‼️ Perhaps the most important thing we can do to keep our kids safe in the carseat is to keep them rear-facing for as long as possible.
