Someone found this little guy near a trail, and knew he needed some help and brought him to us! Marbeled Murrelets were a mystery for so long, because no one could figure out where they nested! Turns out, they nest in old growth forests, on the branches of trees like a mature conifer. Once they leave the nest, they fly directly to the water, where they will be fed by dad for quite a chunk of time before being completely independant. It is not uncommon that they get a little lost or stuck on their journey there. This little one is well fed, and very healthy, and has the last little remnants of final downy feathers on his head. So, we made the decision to just give him the little help of getting him to the ocean near his nest site just before dark. These pelagic shorebirds are critically endagered due to habitat loss of their nesting sites, because of things like commercial logging of our worlds old growth forests, but 85% of this population reaides here in Alaska and is actually doing quite well in a place where we still have some untouched wilderness. #birdsofalaska #conservation #foryou #viral #alaska #birding #popular #trending #duet #tiktok
