So much harmful advice, here’s why: Removing water - do I need to explain this one?! I saw this recommended to aid with toilet training because, yanno, a puppy won’t have accidents if they’re dehydrated. Water is the most basic of survival needs and should have zero restrictions placed around it. If you come trainer who recommends this, RUN AWAY because their ethics ain’t it. No free toy access. Again, dumb. I saw this recommended to aid with reactivity in a 18 week old pup… Apparently, giving dogs too much freedom means that they don’t respect you as a ‘leader’ and will take it upon themselves to protect the ‘pack’. I just can’t with this level of nonsense. (Restricting access to prevent destruction/ingestion is not what I’m talking about here - this is obviously fine!). Whining/crying. If a puppy is crying, they’re communicating something - usually distress. Going to them when they’re distressed does NOT encourage them to whine to get your attention, however, leaving them when they’re distressed does teach them that you aren’t going to help them and that being on their own feels scary/bad. This is a recipe for a lack of trust in you/separation anxiety. Social media means anyone can record a video and claim to be a professional but please, if it sounds a bit suspect or if the individual isn’t very happy to answer questions about their training methods and qualifications, don’t follow their instruction. Just because they have a lot of followers or posted an impressive looking before and after video does not mean their know their stuff. #goldenretriever #puppytraining #puppyadvice #dogtrainer
