you donât need to build the back of your car to sleep in it đđđŒ
We have been camping in our Subaru Outback for years and itâs one of our favorite ways to camp. Itâs super simple, budget friendly, and has allowed us to travel all over the western US without spending much $$.
We can camp like this at free campsites, we cook most of our own meals, and we donât have to book places ahead of time!!
Winter brings about a few extra challenges, so when we recently went to Moab and slept in some really cold temps, we had to make sure we would have enough stuff to stay warm and cozy.
Here are some really helpful pieces of gear weâve loved over the years that make it easier:
âą @Luno Life air mattress. These are fit to specific cars, and this mattress is amaaaazing. We use the battery bank to inflate it. Itâs really durable and we fill it up almost all the way to leave some extra cushion inside.
âą @luno.life inflatable cubes to extend the bed!!! such a game changer. We are 5â9â and 5â10â and we have extra room with this setup
âą a regular fitted sheet and duvet (makes it feel cozy and not like a sleeping bag)
âą sleeping bags or quilts (we used our @enlightenedequipment quilts on top) for extra warmth
âą @Rumpl Blankets blanket on top for more warmth (Iâll take all of the layers pls)
âą homemade window covers (ideally we will paint these black someday but for now, theyâre just fine and easy! Lmk if you want a video on how to make these)
âą Mr buddy propane heater (ideally weâre not running this with the windows closed, itâs just a just in case thing)
âą @segwaypowerstationofficial power station to charge things
âą we will run the heater in the car for a few minutes right when we close it all up just to warm up and then weâre comfortable throughout the whole night!!

An easy car camping setup anyone can replicate âŹïž
SAVE this for future reference!
Weâve seen tons of amazing car camping setups, big platforms and really organized vehicles that seem to make car camping really awesome!
We just havenât put the time into building that kind of setup in the Subaru (and arenât stoked on the idea of losing headroom), and have been using this type of setup for years!
The reality is, however youâre getting outdoors is great if itâs enjoyable, and we really enjoy the simplicity of this setup.
THINGS WE RECOMMEND BRINGING:
đ tons of blankets!! The more, the cozier. Youâre not carrying it on your back, so why not!
đŽ sleeping pads (ours are old and we just found the same ones at a used gear shop for $30! They donât need to be fancy)
đ„± actual pillows!
đïž sleeping bags: if itâs not going to be cold, you can get away with any bags (especially if you have blankets). Every night on this trip was well below freezing, so we used our @rei Magma 15s
đŻ @rticoutdoors cooler to store all of your cold food (we didnât have to buy ice the whole trip!)
đŠ camp kitchen box: we will have a reel coming on this asap!
