Planting a Peony 🌸 I’m planting a young Peony bare-root in a pot. It’s the technique when planting into beds and borders. It’s really easy to grow peonies👇 You can plant peony bare roots directly outside into borders throughout spring. They usually have some shoots already when planting between March and May, the shoots should be exposed above the soil surface after planting. The roots should be in the soil at whatever angle works best. Peonies like a sunny border but can also grow very well in partial shade. You can grow peonies in patio containers too. The pot would need to be at least 30cm in diameter and the plant will need potting up in future years when it grows too large. You should water your peony thoroughly after planting and whenever the soil feels dry in the first year. In future years they don’t require much attention, apart from watering when the weather’s hot and dry. In autumn you simply cut the old foliage right back to 5cm above ground level and leave them to their own devices through winter. They’re fully hardy and don’t need frost protection. They grow back of their own accord the following spring. Peonies typically flower around May/June, but it’s best not to expect flowers from them in the first year, particularly if planting in spring. My peony bare roots finally arrived last week! A complete surprise to my husband who thought fall planting was done! He’s such a trooper because he still helped even though he hated it 😂 Peonies are not high on my list of things I’ve ever ‘had’ to grow. To me they aren’t a huge crop. They bloom for a few weeks and that’s it. However, they are VERY popular in the spring. I went ahead and bought some bare roots anyway. Nothing extravagant…I planted 25 this year. I just want enough to be able to offer to my subscribers in the future. I planted 3 ft apart and about made sure that their buds were only 1.5 to 2 inches below the surface of the ground. This helps ensure they get enough cold period to be able to bloom in the spring. I might regret this later but I didn’t plant in plastic. I honestly kind of get sick of seeing plastic everywhere and can’t stand to see it with perennials.
