From Coffee Bean Shop to $120B Global Chain: Howard Schultz's Starbucks ☕🌎

Howard Schultz wasn't in the coffee business. In 1981, while selling kitchen equipment, he noticed a tiny Seattle coffee bean shop was ordering more coffee makers than Macy's department store.

After visiting Milan and experiencing Italian coffee culture, he convinced Starbucks' owners to try serving espresso drinks in a café setting. When they resisted his full vision, he left to start his own coffee shop called Il Giornale, then bought Starbucks two years later for $3.8 million. The breakthrough came from creating a "third place" between home and work. While competitors focused on quick, cheap coffee, Starbucks built comfortable spaces with premium prices.

Today, Starbucks has over 37,000 stores in 80 countries, serves 100 million customers weekly, and is worth $120 billion.

What transformed a local bean shop into a global empire?

Standardize the Exotic: They turned unfamiliar Italian coffee drinks into standardized products Americans could order confidently, creating a new coffee vocabulary.

Create a Place, Not Just a Product: By designing stores as gathering spaces with comfortable seating and ambient music, they gave customers a reason to pay more and stay longer.

Build a Consistent Experience: Whether in Seattle or Shanghai, customers know exactly what to expect, creating a global brand that feels simultaneously local and familiar.

Schultz's story demonstrates that sometimes the biggest opportunities come from looking beyond American borders. By importing and adapting European coffee culture for American consumers, he created a company that transformed how the world consumes its second most traded commodity.

No one would have problems with billionaires like the former #Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz in this country if all their workers got paid a real living wage. No one earned a billion dollars on their own.

Schultz was born in 1953 and lived when the economy was growing. He got help from the government growing via subsidized housing. Affordable housing funding was cut by 70% in the 80s and has never come back.

These billionaires do not understand people are struggling. Something
needs to change.
