This galaxy pair, Arp 142, nicknamed the Penguin and the Egg, is located 326 million light-years away from us, which means that its light traveled for 326 million years to reach us. This is why, when we observe the universe, we are looking back in time: because the distances are so vast, light takes time to travel from one place to another. This means that every time we look at the sky, we are looking into the past. For example, the Moon is the closest object, only 1.3 light-seconds away; the Sun is 8 light-minutes away; the closest star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light-years away; and the nearest major galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light-years away 💫 Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, N.
