🧴SPF in makeup does not provide enough sun protection: What exactly is SPF in makeup? It is simply sunscreen added to makeup formulas to help protect skin against UV rays. Sunscreen ratings are achieved based on a standard (and quite heavy) application of 2mg/cm2 of sunscreen standardise rating system. You would need over 6-7 times the required amount of traditional sunscreen when entirely relying on just makeup for your sun protection. This means it would take a ton of makeup to provide the adequate protection that regular SPF would provide, and in most cases, people are not going to wear anything remotely close to that much foundation. . 🚗 While glass windows can block most of the sun's UVB rays, they do not completely shield us from UVA rays, which can contribute to sun damage, skin aging and skin cancers. Additionally, UVA rays can also penetrate cloud cover, so even if you are indoors near a window or in a car, some UVA radiation can reach your skin. . 🤵🏾 Although darker skin tones have more melanin, providing some natural protection against the harmful effects of the sun, it does not mean dark-skinned individuals are immune to skin cancer. Moreover, approximately 5% of all skin cancers are caused by factors unrelated to UV radiation and for this reason skin cancers in individuals with darker skin tones are more likely to appear in areas that are not typically exposed to the sun, such as the palms, soles of the feet, or under the nails. Survival rates within this group tend to be lower because skin cancer often goes undiagnosed or is diagnosed at later stages, as it may present differently compared to those with lighter skin. So make sure that you are aware of the signs of skin cancer and regularly examine your skin for any changes or abnormalities. 🧢Dr Austin Lang | Skin Cancer Doctor
