I know the visuals are different, but this is red velvet without all the toxic red 40 dye. There’s a touch of natural plant-based red dye, but that’s it! . Our red velvet actually tastes BETTER then ones with red dye because red dye adds a lot of bitterness to baking. . We had a customer who asked us to make these for them call back concernedthat they aren’t red velvet and maybe are banana bread because they’re “brown”. They were informed ahead of time that we don’t use food dyes, but likely that was overlooked (it happens!). Red velvet is a very light cocoa cake (like 4 Tbsp cocoa for a batch of 20 cupcakes) and a lot of it’s flavour comes from buttermilk. .
