The scape goat is a role in the dysfunctional family system. The scapegoat grows up being shamed, manipulated, neglected and blamed. They remember their childhood as walking on eggshells. They were always on the defensive always having to protect themselves. They might have also seen other siblings (the hero, the golden child) be praised or treated differently. Scapegoats have to deal with emotionally immature parents who feel more comfortable projecting and deflecting that reflecting inwards and actually facing themselves and their issues. In dysfunctional families, there is always a need to avoid issues and emotions. This is why one member of a family tends to become a scapegoat: or the person who the family blames their issues on.
