When we told people we were going to spend the weekend in Chicken, Alaska we got one of two questions: “Where? 🤔” or “Why?🤨” 😂 • This teeny gold-mining community has less than 20 year-round residents. 100 miles from the nearest services, what could we possibly do there?? • 1- Obviously you gotta bring home some gold! We brought our own pans but there are plenty to borrow at the outpost 2- Wood-fired pizzas on Friday! Be first in line because supplies are *extremely* limited 😆 3-How cute is the post office?? We had quite the chat with the local post master while taking in the beautiful views. 4-At the post office there’s a cool display of the inner workings of a gold dredge. It was really neat to learn about how this giant machines work. 5-Visiting ‘Downtown’ was an adventure for sure. Check out the gift shop, saloon, and cafe and if you’re feeling really adventurous, ask about the panty cannon 😂 they take payment is cash, credit, and gold 6-Explore an old miners cabin! There is old mining equipment and historic photographs just about in every building. 7-Take a tour of Pedro’s Creek Gold Dredge! You just gotta wait until the miners are on break so they can come guide your tour 😃 8-In the second week of June, the Gold Camp hosts “Chickenstock” - a music festival that brings quite the crowd! 9-Gotta find the giant chicken for a photo op🐓 10-This is an active gold mining town so you can see the Lost Chicken gold dredge in operation. Or join an excursion to Chicken Gold Camp’s claim and dig up some souvenirs! Also not pictured: world class caribou and moose hunting! (One of the main reasons we went) • We had an awesome time exploring, chatting with the locals about life off the grid, and catching gold fever in this quirky little town.
