The pass across the gulf that separates Mustang Island and St. Joe’s Island is a natural cut but the problem was it was constantly shifting causing a multitude of shipwrecks for those mariners trying to get through to the Corpus Christi Bay. The first attempts to build jetties & create a safe and permanent passage through all failed for multiple reasons with nature at the top. If you get a chance to learn about the complex history of all of the attempts I recommend checking out the Port Aransas Museum in town off of Alister and Brundrett Ave. But the story I want to share today is the importance of the building of these jetties and how through cause and effect they built the Port Aransas economy. It started with the locals figuring out they could make money by guiding those who came to work on the jetties out to fish (for Tarpon). This grew into sport fishing, which turned into tourism- people coming from all over to fish for Tarpon. Subsequently the sport fishing economy and rise in people coming to Port Aransas led to the creation of a seaport on Harbor Island. This shifted the economic focus away from fishing and towards the work force created at the Harbor Island seaport. The town even changed their name from “Tarpon” to “Port Aransas” to reflect more of a maritime way of life.
