The Inner Work can help you understand, address, and heal any and all human issues you may find yourself struggling with. In the case of perfectionism, we have gone through traumatic experiences that imprinted our subconscious with an intimidation of wrongness and mistakes. Usually religion or harsh parenting where wrongness or mistakes are met with extreme rejection or punishment are a common source. Perfectionism is the mind trying to overcompensate for this paranoia by intimidating us to be perfect “or else.” So even after the original intimidation is removed our subconscious continues the pressure because it still thinks it’s keeping us safe. In order to heal from this we need to actually allow ourselves to make peace with our humanness and realize we can only do the best we can in each moment with what we know at the time. Mistakes and consequences that are uncomfortable are a natural part of life and are not personal. To make a mistake just means you have to go through the consequences of that choice and learn, but the mind of perfectionism makes us feel like it is life or death. This is a crippling pressure and internal stress overtime. Whoever originally passed this belief system onto us had not learned any grace in life themselves and most likely live in their own internal torture of impossible standards. True self-confidence doesn’t come from being perfect all the time, it actually is the ability to recover from any setbacks with ease, grace, and most importantly optimism for the lessons learned. The irony is when we have this more relaxed confidence we tend to show up our best. The idea behind inner child healing is that everyone has an inner child within them that represents their childlike innocence, vulnerability, and emotional needs. This inner child is believed to be the source of our deepest emotions and desires, and when our emotional needs were not met during our childhood, it can create emotional wounds that continue to affect us as adults. Inner child healing typically involves working with a therapist or counselor to explore and process these emotional wounds and their underlying causes. This may involve techniques such as visualization, guided imagery, meditation, and journaling, as well as exploring childhood memories and emotions. The goal of inner child healing is to help individuals develop a healthier relationship with their inner child, and to provide the emotional support and resources that their inner child may have been lacking during their childhood. Ultimately, inner child healing can help individuals to feel more whole, connected, and emotionally balanced Inner child wounds: 1. Abandonment - feeling rejected or abandoned by a parent or caregiver, which can lead to feelings of insecurity, fear of rejection, and difficulty forming close relationships. 2. Neglect - not receiving adequate emotional or physical care from a caregiver, which can lead to feelings of unworthiness, low self-esteem, and difficulty trusting others. 3. Physical or emotional abuse - experiencing physical or emotional harm from a caregiver or other authority figure, which can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, anger, and difficulty regulating emotions. 4. Enmeshment - feeling overly dependent or enmeshed with a parent or caregiver, which can lead to difficulty setting boundaries, fear of abandonment, and difficulty developing intimate relationshos. 5. Inner child work involves exploring and healing emotional experiences and memories of one’s childhood. It’s based on the idea that when there is unresolved emotion from childhood, it can influence (generally unconsciously) our adult behaviors, relationships, and emotional well-being in ways that we don’t want. So by doing this work to heal, it can positively impact truly every single area of your life, including increased self-compassion and creativity, reduced anxiety, and really it improves how you relate to yourself and the world. While I think everyone can benefit from inner child work, if you resonate with any of the following, it would likely be helpful: -recurring relationship patterns of mistrust, fear of abandonment and confrontation -disproportionate reactions to events -trouble naming, managing or expressing emotions -perfectionist tendencies -trouble resting or viewing rest as unproductive -low self-esteem -anxiety -resentment toward caregivers Even if we’re brought up in a loving, safe home, experiences happen when we’re children where we create stories and beliefs about ourselves and the world that then run our lives. Say you noticed that when you got an A you were praised but when you got a B you weren’t, this could create a belief that you need to be perfect or the best to receive love. While that was not the intent of our teacher or caregiver, our child brain may interpret it as such. But now as an adult, you can examine your beliefs and patterns and choose which actually serve you. Your own love truly is magical and by loving on your inner child (and current self), things always shift for the better.
