Growing garlic has been a favorite of mine over the years! The flavor is simply UNMATCHED!! So excited for thus years harvest! Ive you want to know more details on the garlic j have a video up over on youtube of the harvest day/explaining the things I did differently to grow more pounds but less heads! The garlic heads were such great sizes this year!! #freezedried #garlicharvest #garlic #curing #preservingtheharvest #homegrown #homegrownfood #growyourownfood #backyardhomestead #gardening
The Garlic Growth Timeline: How Long Does it Take to Cultivate this Flavourful Crop? October: Just before the ground started to freeze, we planted garlic cloves 4” deep, about 6” apart, applied worm castings to each hole and planted the cloves with the pointy tip facing up. Then, about 4-6” layer of brown leaves were added to the top soil for mulch. This protects the cloves during winter as it lays dormant. April: They started to sprout and we amended with a balanced fertilizer and added worm castings every month. Watered deep every 2 days in the morning June: Thin, curly, green garlic scape produced right at the centre of the stem. They are edible and can be added to many dishes. If left be, it will turn into a flower and the plant will go to seed. By cutting the scape, the plant will direct all the energy into producing a bigger bulb size. July: 2-3 of the bottom leaves have completely turned brown which is a good sign that they’re ready to be harvested. Carefully dig 4-5” away from the stem to prevent damaging the bulb. No need to rinse off the garlic bulb, leave it to dry protected from rain for a couple of days. This will help with the curing process for long term storage. #learning #garlic #gardening101 #howto #tips #gardening #daily
It’s really couldn’t be easier — and now is the perfect time to plant garlic in zones 7b/8a. I was always super intimidated by garlic for some reason but it’s so simple and a perfect gateway vegetable if you’ve been thinking about adding a veggie bed to your garden — growing garlic might get you hooked 🤣 #fallgarden #garlicplanting #gardeningwithkids #veggiegarden #potagergarden #growyourownfood #snackgarden #growyourownsnacks #backyardgardeninspo #gardeninspo #gardentips #gardening
There are tons of garlic hacks but this is the actual easiest planting method to grow great garlic bulbs. Don’t over complicate it! You can sprout grocery garlic but it’s just less likely to sprout as they’re older and sprayed with growth inhibitors. Best used for the tops. I recommend buying seed garlic if you want to grow bulbs. #garden

MORE ABOUT GARLIC I JI - My most asked question is where do I order my seed garlic from. Ive ordered only from MADRIVERGARL!CGROWERS for every year Ive grown garlic and highly suggest them. They are g organic garlic farm with 40+ varieties to choose from. I originally found them because they are a similar growing zone to me. - Ive planted mostly hardneck garlic over the years. Hardneck and soft neck are simply the stems of the garlic. Hardneck is more advised for cooler winters. This last year I also added softenck into the mix and I had a great harvest of it and its storing great! Softneck tends to store a lot longer then hardneck, but hardneck has a lot better of a flavor in my experience and I highly suggest growing it! - I typically plant the last week of October and Harvest between the first and second week of June. I harvest when about 1/2 of the leaves have died back. Each left represents a paper layer and if you let 2 many die back it could result in poor storage or even rot in the ground. 1/2 way tends to be a good balance because you also dont want to harvest to soon either. With hardneck about 1 month prior to harvest a stem will form called a scape. I remove these as its been known to help send the energy to the bulb resulting in a bigger bulb. You can also eat the scapes which taste amazing!! - Ive played around with spacing over the years. Anywhere between 4-8 inches apart. I HIGHLY SUGGEST going as close to inches between as possible. If your doing raised beds this allows for good airflow without everything being supper crammed. I had more consistent larger bulbs by giving more room!! I planted less garlic this year but grew 7 more pounds this year and this was a big factor! THE LARGER THE CLOVE GOING INTO THE GROUND THE BETTER IN MY EXPERIENCE. Plant 2-3 inches deep. - FEED YOUR GARLIC!! At planting make sure you amend beds. If you can soil test prior I highly suggest doing so. This will tell you the PH/anything your soil might be missing. When it comes to feeding the garlic in the late winter/ spring/ Ive found foliar feeds to be my new favorite thing! I love feeding with a fish and seaweed fertilizer to be my favorite so far! I did feedings every 10-14 days with the garlic this year. Years prior I did a combo of blood meal earlier on and bone meal after. Most graduals you don't have to apply often and will feed your plants for weeks on end. - The seed free mulch I use is one called EZ Straw, The Foliar Feed is from Neptunes Harvest, My garden spayer is from petra tools! ⚠️Don’t make these common garlic planting mistakes! 1) Using the right garlic is KEY - Grocery store garlic may not sprout and is likely not the best variety for your location. Find a variety that’s suited to your climate through a seed supplier or your local farmers market. I love music garlic! 2) Fall is the best time to plant garlic, not spring! Plant 1 month before your ground freezes solid. Early October is perfect for MN 3) Don’t peel those cloves! Peel only what you have to in order to separate the cloves, but keep as much on as you can! If any fleshy part is exposed, save that clove for fresh eating 4) Space the cloves 6” apart - I love my cardboard spacer! 5) Make sure to plant them pointy side up! 6) Add a thick layer of protective mulch (I like organic straw) To see a full video of me planting my garlic (and learn a bit more about each tip!💫) head over to YouTube! Have you planted your garlic yet? If not, when are you planning to based on your location? I’d love to know! ☺️
