The Garlic Growth Timeline: How Long Does it Take to Cultivate this Flavourful Crop? October: Just before the ground started to freeze, we planted garlic cloves 4” deep, about 6” apart, applied worm castings to each hole and planted the cloves with the pointy tip facing up. Then, about 4-6” layer of brown leaves were added to the top soil for mulch. This protects the cloves during winter as it lays dormant. April: They started to sprout and we amended with a balanced fertilizer and added worm castings every month. Watered deep every 2 days in the morning June: Thin, curly, green garlic scape produced right at the centre of the stem. They are edible and can be added to many dishes. If left be, it will turn into a flower and the plant will go to seed. By cutting the scape, the plant will direct all the energy into producing a bigger bulb size. July: 2-3 of the bottom leaves have completely turned brown which is a good sign that they’re ready to be harvested. Carefully dig 4-5” away from the stem to prevent damaging the bulb. No need to rinse off the garlic bulb, leave it to dry protected from rain for a couple of days. This will help with the curing process for long term storage. #learning #garlic #gardening101 #howto #tips #gardening #daily
