SD Local’s Best Kept Secret is actually #1 Best Taco Spots in America as rated on Yelp in 2022 🌮 @edfernandezbirrieria sits in the community of Nestor on the South Bay Border in San Diego, CA. They specialize in making beef birria tacos and I can see why it’s so popular! I get the Ed Fernandez #1 combo for $21.50 which comes with a Taco, Chupacabra, Quesataco, and Quesataco Extremo. You can also get these individually but if you want a little piece of everything then the combo is where to go! All of the tacos use their slow-stewed beef birria but they all use different types of tortillas (that are handmade) which makes them a little more identifiable. Some of the tortillas are thicker, the quesatacos have the cheese melted on first, etc but all and all I think my favorite was the quesataco. Next time I want to try some of their menudo and maybe their quesatacos that come with an egg on top which is called the eggtremo. This spot has won an award for being the best Mexican restaurant in San Diego multiple times, so we had to go and check it out for ourselves. 🌮🇲🇽🏆 . This is @elsuenosd located in Old Town and I'm actually shocked I've never been here. It is a little bit more hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Old Town and the outdoor space is so lovely, we could have sat there all day! Apparently the whole menu has been revamped (we always stalk the menu on Yelp so we were surprised to see all new offerings) and we had a hard time deciding as everything looked really tasty. See below for everything we ordered, but for some highlights, they absolutely nailed a classic margarita. We also opted for their Tortilla Service vs typical chips & salsa and my god - the honey chili butter combined with their piping hot fresh tortillas was INSANE! They also offered Fundido and it was easily one of the best we've had (to note, it's more of that string-y type of cheese vs super melted/watery kind) and it was filled with shrimp, chorizo and pickled onion that gave it great balance. We thought the fact that they offered Mole Chicken Wings was really fun and unique, and while Quesadillas aren't ground breaking, they made a heck of a good one that had a lot of cheese & carne asada inside. Overall, we totally understand why they've won several awards and will most definitely be back. Enjoy 🫶🏻 .
