Full instructions hitting our YouTube today! Did you know that a double layer of 6 mil greenhouse film has a higher R-value (insulation!) than a glass panel greenhouse? When we start overflowing from our glass greenhouse we use raised beds as quick greenhouses and they work great for a few degrees of extra protection (or if you have clearance from combustibles in your mini greenhouse space you can even pop a greenhouse heater in there for an actual greenhouse that will hold temps around 23-25 degrees F above outside temps!). For a 4x8’ bed, all you’ll need is: -10 (1/2” x24”) pieces of rebar -nylon cord or clothesline for spine -20’ x10’ of at least 6 mil greenhouse plastic, or plastic sheeting if you’re in a pinch but actual UV-rated greenhouse plastic will last much longer -four 10’ long hoops made of PVC or electrical metal conduit (PVC works if you don’t have access to a hoop bender, but if you plan on making a lot or using these every year invest in the hoop bender and bend metal hoops as they won’t degrade the greenhouse plastic like the PVC will over time) -if you’re adding an electric heater to the space, be sure it is greenhouse rated for moisture, the plug is within the structure and you have 3’ of clearance from combustibles like dried leaves or debris. For extra safety place it on a non combustible surface like a fiberglass tray or paver. This morning it’s 25 degrees out and a toasty 49 inside (with heater on). If the heater makes you nervous (remember, safety first!) it will still give you an extended growing season with frost protection and a few degrees of extra warmth, especially if you use frost fabric within the structure! I didn’t have a reliable greenhouse for my seedlings, but I made a DIY hoop cover that worked great with my @Vego Garden raised bed. It was easy to set up and take down, using basic materials I already had. Materials for the hoop cover frame: - 1/2 inch poly tubing for the hoops - 2 or 3 ft stakes to secure the hoops - 12-18 inch strings to tie everything together Materials for the Cover: - 6 mil plastic sheeting for cold weather - Insect netting for warm weather and intense sunlight, or wildlife netting - Clips to hold the covers in place My DIY cover acted like a greenhouse, protecting my tender veggies when it was around 40°F. For colder temps, I added extra frost protection or used the plastic sheeting. If it got closer to 35°F, I brought the plants inside. When it was sunny, I opened part of the cover to let warm air out. Paying attention to the weather was very important, as too much heat or cold could harm the plants. Some leaves got burnt from the temperature changes, but I just removed them and the plants were fine!
