Think an Aussie is for you?? Use this checklist to find out ⤵️ ✅ You enjoy being active and getting outdoors for more than just a walk around the block. Aussies typically need at least one hour of dedicated exercise per day combined with mental enrichment. ✅ You are open to or interested in training your dog. Aussies are very prone to developing neurotic behaviors like herding, nipping, barking, reactivity, and anxiety if they are not given structure and basic training ground rules. ✅ You are okay with having a personal shadow follow your every footstep. If you’re an independent person that doesn’t like your personal space being invaded, an Aussie may not be the best fit for you 😂 ✅ You don’t mind cleaning up lots of hair and brushing them regularly. Aussies typically have a thick double coat that sheds year-round. Brushing a couple times a week and getting them professionally groomed once every 6-8 weeks is pertinent to reducing shedding and preventing them from getting matted (and having to be shaved!!) Bottom line, Australian Shepherds can be AMAZING dogs. They can be great family dogs that develop an incredible bond with their person. But, like any other breed, they can develop behavioral issues if their mental and physical needs are not met. They are 𝐧𝐨𝐭 a breed to get just because they look pretty and you see them everywhere. They are a working breed designed to herd 1000lb cattle, so be prepared to fulfill their genetic needs with exercise, training, and enrichment!
