《桂花巷 osmanthus alley》at the start of this year, i became the proud owner of a first edition copy of 潘越雲 michelle pan’s 1988 滾石唱片rock records LP 《情字這條路 the way of love》, a collection of taiwanese love songs sung in taiwanese hokkien 🥹🌾 michelle pan recorded many mandarin albums, but few in her mother tongue language. when i got home, i immediately put the record on and of course got chills from my favorite hits off this album 《若我輕輕叫著你的名 i call your name softly》 and the title track 《情字這條路 the way of love》, but through the warm crackle of vinyl, i felt like i was hearing 《桂花巷 osmanthus alley》 seep into my bones for the first time 😭 throughout her career, pan sang many 電影主題曲 film theme songs and this song is from 陳坤厚 chen kun hou’s 1987 film of the same title. the devastating poetic lyrics are by writer director 吳念真 wu nien jen 🤯 and i’ve been savoring this song on vinyl on repeat through this winter 🥰

《鄉愁藍調 homesick blues》i started writing this song after hearing the melody of the chorus in a dream filled with rusty road signs. what destination they were pointing to, i did not yet know. i could only follow the trails and clues and be led by the stars. later the melody for the verses came through my harmonica and i held onto it, waiting for the words that could carry it. i had a feeling i would only be able to write the verses after soaking in sights and smells on my taiwan musical pilgrimage. not only did the details of the verses come after exploring my parents’ childhood streets, but the song became a chronicle and map of my journey home within and without. 「from the misty cauldrons springing 溫泉 sulfur, to the fishing boats in 鹽埕 district harbor; from jersey babies down the shore to 淡水, the stars aligned a hometown at dusk bay」， homesick blues is a love letter to all the places and people i feel most at home with in this lifetime 🥰💌

《early lou reed may 1965 demo》 been haunted by the spirit of early lou reed these months. back in december, stopped by 感傷唱片行 and saw the cassette version of light in the attic’s inaugural release for their lou reed archive series — words & music, may 1965. my jaw hit the floor when i heard these early lou reed demos with him playing “don’t think twice” and “pale blue eyes” with bob dylanesque harmonica! 😮
in march i went to hk just for the day and stopped by cafe kubrick. outside broadway cinematheque was the hk version poster of wim wender’s 《我的完美日常 perfect days》。 when i stepped inside, a tiny retro cassette player was emitting the light in the attic lou reed demo version of pale blue eyes. perfect days film/soundtrack would become my favorite of the year so far 😍😭

《黃昏的故鄉 lapsteel solo break 🥹🚂🌬️✨》shoutout to my friend alex hu for letting me borrow his hawai’ian lapsteel! it was perfect instrumentation for this tune 😌, the 「夏」in 文夏 wen hsia is actually not for summer but for 夏威夷 hawai’i. wen hsia was born into a wealthy tainan family and able to study music abroad in tokyo from 1943-1945, where he fell in love with the music of hawai’i and learned how to play hawai’ian steel guitar and ukelele. his first performances after he returned to taiwan were billed as the bûn hā hawai’ian band (bûn hā is the taiyu pronounciation of his moniker), a quartet that played hawai’ian themed ballads. you can also hear his hawai’ian steel guitar licks and runs all over his early releases for 亞洲唱片asia records!

hi! i recorded a mulecaster slide guitar version of taiwanese folk song 《黃昏的故鄉 hometown at dusk》

it’s the song that has been haunting, beckoning, and embracing me all year just endlessly streaming on a loop, floating in my head even in my sleep. luckily there’s an abundance of renditions to cycle through, my favorites are: a slow sweeping ballad version by the legendary 蔡振南 tsai chen nan, an acoustic fingerstyle guitar version by 董事長樂團 the chairman ft. 文夏 wen hsia himself, of course the original 1959 文夏 version, an upbeat soulful surfy crooner version by 葉啟田 ye qi tian, and a dreamy synthy version by 余天 yu tian.

it’s also the name of my new substack blog! i thought it would be fun to record a little 30 sec jingle trailer to introduce the blog and once i started working on that it didn’t make any sense not to record the whole song, so here we are! 😛🦊🌻🚞🎶

🛤️🚞🎫 the train ticket says midnight but you have nowhere else to go and you’ve already seen it all. a thousand miles from home, here you are in trance state watching the trains come and go, the whistles blowing by. you are in no rush and the train station platform is a prime people watching place. you chat up the friendly folks on the bench next to you and add more scribbles to your sketchbook. you examine the architecture and admire the aged patina and your mind starts spinning thinking about dynasties and nature. you marvel at the clock designs, lattice windows, and intricate handiwork on fading flower tiles then fall in love with a local artist on display. the snack options are hip and tasty (so many collabs) and they even have a non alcoholic dark brew on tap! you go for the spicy peanuts, always. the breeze lofts in all sorts of overwhelming smells: engine fuel, fried food from the stalls, personal perfumes, hints of floral, summer saturation. so many roads, so many trains, by now you know they all lead to the same destination. you’ve learned how to sit peacefully and wait. nothing to do, no one but be. with commotion bustling all around you, there is stillness in your heart and you finally reach that space of silence and clarity. you hear a familiar sound, faint at first, but it grows louder and louder until your whole body is singing its song in unison. it calls you all aboard — we’ll see you at midnight, love 😘

《月夜愁 moonlight night melancholy》a popular taiwanese tune during the japanese occupation era, composed by 鄧雨賢 teng yu hsien with lyrics by 周添旺 chou tian wang and released by columbia records in 1933. the song is based on an indigenous melody from the ketagalan tribe and was collected by pastor marshall mackay who turned it into a missionary hymn titled 《naomi》. teng yu hsien later arranged his composition based on the mackay hymn. in 1937 after the pacific war broke out, the japanese government began a movement of imperial japanization and had the lyrics rewritten by japanese songwriter 粟原白也 to become a propaganda march song in 2/4 time 《軍夫の妻 / 軍伕之妻 wife of an army husband》to encourage taiwanese to join the army. in the 1970s, the song was a mandarin hit for 鄧麗君 teresa teng under the title 《情人再見 goodbye lover》. the same melody has been repackaged and repurposed through multiple regime changes, carrying enduring sorrow under the moonlight.

《new buzzy bee 🌺🐝》wrote this song as a tribute to memphis minnie the early country blues guitar star. bumblebees have been a classic blues motif, from slim harpo’s “i’m a king bee” and “buzz me, babe” to muddy waters’ “honey bee” and taj mahal’s “queen bee”, but memphis minnie was the original trendsetter, recording her hit single “bumble bee” in february 1930 for vocalion!

《黃昏的故鄉 hometown at dusk》is an example of a “混血歌曲 mixed blood song”, cover songs of japanese pop melodies in the enka tradition rewritten with taiwanese hokkien lyrics. taiwanese singer 文夏 wen shia, known as “寶島歌王 king of treasure island” and “國寶歌王 national treasure song king”, converted many japanese melodies (over 300!) under his pen name “愁人 the melancholic” into taiwanese hits. because of the japaneseness of his songs, wen shia was a frequent target of the kmt censorship and he held a record 99 banned songs.

赤い夕陽の故郷recorded in 1958 by japanese enka singer 三橋美智也 michiya mihashi. wen shia’s 1959 version is one of his most well known songs and was banned for “corroding the military spirit by evoking homesickness”. during martial law and the white terror period, this was a popular tune for taiwan independence activists. many taiwanese pro-democracy supporters who were blacklisted by the government during martial law were unable to return home for over 20 years so this song is understandably the most sung tune for overseas taiwanese folks, with its opening verses a call to return — 「叫著我，叫著我，黃昏的故鄉不時地叫我 calling me, calling me, hometown at dusk calls me from time to time」。
