God I love doing this work I started negotiating consulting after I realized that most people don’t know how to navigate highly difficult people with effectiveness. Sure you can just not engage the whole way through, but that’s not really the problem. Getting what you want AND navigating a difficult person is the tricky part. People that love dominance, power and control tend to use a few tactics that have worked on someone for YEARS. They get them to engage, play to their emotions, manipulate, use guilt and fear as tactics, sow seeds of doubt. It’s only when you realize what game they are playing, become emotionally unavailable and play a different game, that will allow you to succeed. Once you realize you hold more power than you think, the game changes forever.
