Sunday , our hearts were touched as we came together at the People’s Church in NYC to celebrate the life of our beloved Chairman Jose “Cha cha” Jimenez. It was a day filled with a mix of emotions as we reminisced and shared cherished memories with our community. The event was a beautiful tribute to Cha cha’s incredible life, made possible by the heartfelt speeches, passionate performances, and the vibrant cultural spirit that surrounded us. We are deeply thankful to everyone who made this day possible, helping us honor Cha cha in a way that truly reflected his essence. May his legacy continue to shine brightly in our hearts and lives.

Today marks the 55th anniversary of the occupation of the First Spanish United Methodist Church, also known as the People's Church, by the Young Lords. Located on 111th St on Young Lord Way in East Harlem, this historic church has been a symbol of resistance and resilience for our community. After the Sunday service, community members had the opportunity to share their grievances. Mickey Melendez, Felipe Luciano, Joanna Fernandez, and myself, the National Chairman of the New Era Young Lords, took the floor to address the current state of the church and its role in the community. In my speech, I spoke directly to the pastor about his sermon on self-reflection, urging him to consider the ways in which the church has fallen short of its commitment to serving the community.
