Chubs is a 40 yo amazon who was surrendered to me 3 weeks ago after his previous owner, who had him his whole life, passed away. Amazons can live over 60 years in captivity. Unfortunately, though he was very loved, information on proper parrot care was scarce and mostly incorrect in the 1980’s when Chubs was born. My goal is to help Chubs become a confident, well adjusted bird and find him the perfect forever home. #chubs #amazonparrot #amazon #parrot #bird #rescue #aviary

Feather destructive behaviors (plucking, barbering, over preening) may occur for a number of reasons. Stress, boredom, or an underlying illness are a few. But a very common cause that is often overlooked is hormones. Environmental cues typically trigger hormones. Some environmental cues include, an abundance of food (especially high energy foods), long daylight hours, and access to a mate and/or a nest. In our homes, there are similar cues. It is often very difficult to avoid hormones entirely. Even if you do everything right, many birds will still have some hormonal behaviors, especially during the mating seasons (spring/fall). Accept, in our homes, a bird can become hormonal year round if hormone triggers are present. Feather destructive behaviors are particularly difficult to manage because, though they may begin for one of the previously mentioned reasons, they can quickly become a self reinforcing habit. The longer a bird exhibits feather destructive behavior, the harder it may be to stop or reverse. In Auggie’s case, she started plucking in her previous home. Over the last several months she had let her feathers grow in, but this week, in less than a day, she managed to pull them all out again. Why? I believe it is due to hormones. Auggie’s hormones are difficult to keep in check. It is my belief that seasonal changes may trigger her plucking. What can I do about it? For now, nothing. We will watch and wait. My guess is, she will stop after a couple of months and they will start to grow in again
until fall when she may do it again. One option I am considering is hormone injections or a hormone implant, but those are last resorts, and they don’t always work. #auggie #quaker #parrot #bird #rescue #plucking #hormones

A lot of you have asked if Auggie gets along with my husband. When she arrived, Auggie would attack my husband when he walked in the room. I filmed this interaction between them last week. Pretty sure she is warming up to him, but mom’s bacon pancakes are still better 😂 #auggie #quakerparrot #parrot #bird #rescue #bacon

About 10 weeks ago Aurora stopped eating and lost a significant amount of weight. We did find the cause and treated her with strong anti-inflammatory injections once a week for the last 8 weeks. She is finally feeling like herself again and I couldn’t be happier. There was a short period of time about a month ago when I wondered if she would make it. It was hard to see her suffering. That is why I haven’t been sharing videos of her recently. I do want to talk about her diagnosis and what it means for us long term for those interested. I will do that either in a longer video or in a livestream very soon now that she is doing ok.

Extremely vulnerable post 💔 Please be kind. In July 2023, we went to Utah with Aurora for our first free flight trip (basically a planned trip where people get together to fly their free flight trained birds outside). That same week, my son Zach went with some friends to Wisconsin for the Oshkosh air show. My son was an aviation mechanic for the Air Force and was obsessed with planes, particularly WWII era planes. On the morning of July 29th, one day before he was scheduled to fly home, he decided to ride with a pilot friend (my son was not a pilot) in a T6-Texan, a WWII trainer, something he had wanted to do for a very long time. The plane went down as I was on the other side of the country loading the car for the drive home. I didn't find out until 4:30 that evening. My husband and I drove through the night to get home to my family. The only words I have to describe that day is living nightmare. It’s the most pain I have ever felt, and will probably ever feel, in my life. It’s taken me a long time to share about this here but I am sharing it because it is a big part of my life that still impacts me today. I still look up, as if I am expecting to see him, whenever a plane flies over. If not for the birds, I don't know what I would have done. They needed me and that gave me purpose in my darkest hours. The pain has never gone away. I have just learned to live with it and find joy despite it. Part of that is because Zach would have wanted me to. Part of that is because I want to. I have promised myself to love and live life to the fullest for my son who can’t. Love to you all, Jen 💚

Lola’s mom brought me lots of Lola’s things to keep her happy and comfortable while she was staying with us for the next several months. I thought I had gone through it all, but when I stumbled upon what appeared to be either a brand new, or very clean, dog dish I remembered that Lola’s mom had mentioned that Lola liked to bathe in it. No sooner did I fill it with water than Lola jumped in and started splashing around. #parrot #bird #lola #conure
