A fair and better society is about all of us. It is about the respect and friendship we extend to each other. Regardless of our backgrounds and educational achievements. Regardless of race and religion, or any other differences. It is about listening to every voice and every heart. It’s about 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗹. #Tharman #TharmanShanmugaratnam #RespectForAllSG #🍍

A happy Lunar New Year! And wishing everyone the wisdom, charm and creativity associated with the Year of the Snake. Think of the folk who make it all possible as we enjoy the festivities. The tailors and florists who bring colour and flourish. The barbers and hairdressers who give us a fresh or stylo look. The cobblers and calligraphers, each doing their own fine art. The stallholders offering red LNY couplets and decorations for good luck. The fishmongers, and poultry and vegetable stallholders, who begin their day well before dawn. The fruit sellers, always there with fresh and juicy produce. Always there for us. #RespectForAll

Celebrating our @Team Singapore Olympians and Paralympians. From our youngest ever Olympic medallist Maximilian Maeder to Yip Pin Xiu with her double gold yet again, to gutsy equestrian Gemma Rose Foo and every one of the 33 who made it through grueling training and competition to reach Paris 2024. Sports, like life, doesn’t always go as planned. You put in years of hard work, only to have something crop up, something that keeps you from doing as well as you hoped. But then also moments when you take the competition by surprise and win. So celebrate that spirit that takes us through the ups and downs. Knowing that it is the downs that make the ups all the more meaningful, both for each of them and for the nation. #RespectForAll #OneTeamOneDream #Paris2024

I was never good at drawing. But it’s fun. Happy Children’s Day! And thanks to Maya and Kayla for teaching me and #janeittogi a thing or two. Both from the promising ‘young alumni’ of @NLB Singapore's kidsREAD programme.

It was a joy to host His Holiness Pope Francis on his first visit to Singapore. He has been a powerful voice for peace and our shared humanity. Singapore and the Holy See, as friends and partners, will I am sure see deeper ties in the years to come. @catholic.sg #popefrancis

"Whatever comes, comes… what keeps me working hard is just really wanting to be better than I was.” - Yip Pin Xiu last night after she won the 100m backstroke at the Paris Paralympics. It was her sixth gold in five paralympics since her debut at the Beijing Games in 2008. We must always be a nation of people who gain spirit from each other’s efforts and triumphs. Like we all gain spirit from what Pin Xiu did last night. #RespectforAll #TeamSingapore #NDP2024 Credit: CNA, SportSG/Eng Chin An, MDDI/Terence Tan

With heavy rain drenching the Opening of the Paris Olympics, nothing was more heartwarming for us than seeing our Team Singapore athletes in high spirits as they sailed down the River Seine! You can just feel their hearts bouncing in the video. It was an Olympics opening ceremony like no other. With performances on the banks and bridges along the River Seine, and along subway lines and other everyday places. Featuring both street kids and professional dancers. Songs that captured the soul of Paris. And sportspersons themselves, like Zinedine Zidane, one of the greatest French footballers ever. All beamed onto screens around the viewing platforms by the river. They defied the organised sabotage of the public transport network before the Opening. The Olympic spirit won, and so did French creativity. I stayed on with my wife, wearing slightly waterproof ponchos, to applaud the last of the 205 country delegations that sailed through the Seine. Each with their own dreams. We were also happy to meet French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron, and many foreign leaders at the pre-Opening reception. #TeamSG #OneTeamOneDream #Olympics #Paris2024 MDDI Photo by Chwee

There is a lot to admire in how the French are hosting the Olympics. They have avoided building major new facilities, so that they don't end up with white elephants after the Games. They’ve also speeded up the greening of Paris – planting some 300,000 new trees in public places, adding 400km of new bicycle paths, and cleaning up the River Seine. They can be proud to be hosting the world’s largest sports event in a lean, sustainable and attractive way. I was very happy to meet Singaporeans living and working in France at a reception hosted by our Ambassador Foo Teow Lee. Aspiring pastry chefs learning from the best in France, tech entrepreneurs, artists, air force personnel, and more. They follow in the footsteps of others like fashion designer Andrew Gn, whose name has been famous in France’s cultural landscape. The exchange of culture and ideas between France and Singapore continues today, and long may we benefit from it. #TeamSG #OneTeamOneDream #Paris2024 #Olympics #RespectforAll Video: President's remarks at the Overseas Singaporean reception in Paris. Tucked into a hearty (and healthy!) lunch with several of our TeamSG Olympians after their morning training sessions, at one of the Games Village canteens. Talked about how they fell in love with their chosen sport or event - for some it was just chance. And about how they are keeping their balance each day despite intense training schedules, with time to rest and refresh. Let's celebrate all our sportspersons - not only our Olympians and those who win, but each and every one who tries their very best and goes further than they once thought they could. #TeamSG #OneTeamOneDream #Paris2024 #Olympics #RespectForAll Photo credits: SportSG/Jeremy Lee; Wikipedia/ user: chensiyuan; Straits Times/ Ng Sor Luan; SNOC/ Andy Chua; MDDI/ Chwee.

Something stirring about the way Malay dance and Chinese orchestral music were woven together in a fascinating performance of ‘Sisters’ Islands’ - on the opening night of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s new season. The music for Sisters’ Islands was first created by talented local composer Wang Chenwei, when he was just 17. He was inspired by the Malay legend of how the two islands emerged among Singapore’s Southern Islands. The dance was choreographed by the celebrated Osman Hamid, both to visualize the story of the islands and to blend in with the music of SCO conducted by Quek Ling Kiong. All done very imaginatively. With dancers from Era Dance Theatre weaving down the aisles and across the stage with their Asli and Zapin dance moves* - telling the story of how the islands emerged after two sisters, captured and separated by pirates, had drowned at the location. And the SCO’s musicians skilfully creating the mood, especially with the gamelan, dizi (Chinese flute), gaohu (the string instrument developed from the erhu), liuqin (stringed mandolin) and the conch (shell trumpet). *Asli and Zapin are traditional Malay dance forms. Zapin is believed to have been brought by Persian or Arab traders to our region round the 14-16th centuries. Photo by Kenneth Tan, Ministry of Digital Development and Information. #respectforall

Faizal Salim surprises many. He has been playing the guzheng (Chinese zither) since his youth, and does so with flair. He and Cedric Chin on the pipa (the Chinese lute) are often a duo, playing Chinese, Malay and Western tunes. Faizal and Cedric were one of several very engaging performances at the Inter-Religious and Inter-Racial Night, hosted by the Thye Hwa Kwan Moral Society yesterday. Music, dance and art open our minds to how barriers can be crossed. #RespectforAll
