·1-15🔓 New AI secret language just unlocked. Did you see what happened there? They both realised they were AI assistants and then switched to their dial-up modem chat? This scene is from a hackathon in London - these are two AI agents from a company called ElevenLabs and within their setup, they’ll have been programmed to do this for the hackathon by the developers, Boris Starkov and Anton Pidkuiko.

·1-28People with working class accents are more likely to be suspected of doing something criminal. Translation: accent bias in the UK literally makes you sound more guilty #accents #language

·1-5Got about twenty more grey hairs and a new anxiety dream - but that’s fine, because I’ve got new friends for life and A UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE WIN!!!! I was the second youngest contestant in the entire competition (by 12 days) and the youngest in this final - I was absolutely carried by a set of spectacularly smart women but pleased I could contribute my knowledge of food, languages, music and Spanish-speaking countries throughout the games when needed. Fun fact - I played Juno in Purcell’s The Faerie Queene at Durham when I was 19! I er also sang in the Neptune planets choir in a Durham Cathedral concert but…let’s pretend that didn’t happen lol I had the best time at Durham all those years ago - thank you Amol and #UniversityChallenge for a chance to relive it all again. I feel very proud to be an alumna.

·2024-12-26#AD Why do we call the Renaissance the Renaissance? And why do we use the French word for it? Find out more about this fascinating artistic and cultural movement with the BBC's new documentary Renaissance: The Blood and the Beauty, available to watch on BBC iPlayer. The works featured in this film are from Drawing the Italian Renaissance exhibition at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. #royalcollectiontrust

·2024-12-23Do you need accountability to finally learn an endangered language that you care about in 2025? Welcome to my endangered language challenge! We are a mighty Discord group who have all pledged to do a 30 day challenge where we connect with a particular language every day, prompted by a task that I set. All you do is pick a language, and follow tasks I set every day. Your language choice is totally up to you, and the tasks I set will be applicable for whichever language you pick. I’ll be doing Emilian, and we’ve got a bunch doing Irish and Basque, and plenty more languages have been mentioned…with over 3,000 languages at risk of disappearing by the end of this century you sadly have many to choose from. I encourage you to pick one you have a personal connection to, or one where the country you’re from has played a role in said language’s vulnerability. If you want to join, comment by telling me you want to do it with the language you’d like to study and I’ll message you an invite. If you can’t decide on a language yet, still let me know as the Discord has resources for you to find language lists. That’s it from me and see you on the ELC in January! 👋
