·2021-10-10When the sun sets in the Kalahari, the peaceful calm of the day gives way to chaos. Sirga and the three wild lions have been going at each other nightly, and it’s clear these new lions are staking their claim to the territory. Sirga, however, is not backing down. After years of calling this place home, she sees it as hers, just as any lion would. For Sirga, these intruders are unwelcome, and she reacts as any lioness would—by fighting back. Fortunately, there’s a fence separating them, but the sounds of the roaring and growling are intense, making it impossible to sleep. My caravan, where I sleep, is only about 30 meters from Sirga’s fence, so the commotion feels incredibly close. When things get out of hand, I head out with a vehicle to chase the wild lions away, restoring a brief moment of quiet. I’ve just uploaded a 30-minute video with an in-depth look at the current situation, including some incredible and raw moments. ·2024-11-21Sirga’s trust in me runs so deep that she allows me to approach and even move her prey. Typically, lions are highly aggressive around their kills, refusing to let anyone, human or animal, come near. But Sirga is different. Raised as an “only child,” she never had to compete with siblings or relatives for food. This unique upbringing has shaped her behavior, making her more relaxed in my presence. However, her instincts remain sharp; she will fiercely defend her meals from any intruders like hyenas, jackals, and vultures.

·2024-11-20It’s hard to stay on your feet when a 400-pound lioness is constantly trying to trip you up. 😅 I love that Sirga displays this playful behavior that I normally only observe in cubs and young lions

·2024-9-11Lions are not mindless Killing machines that go berserk at the scent of blood. They are sentient beings, capable of experiencing a range of emotions and demonstrating complex behaviors. These majestic creatures exhibit social structures within their prides, showing loyalty and care for one another. Lions communicate through a variety of vocalizations, body language, and scent markings. What Sirga does here is called a Flehmen Response. This behavior involves the lion curling back its lips, opening its mouth, and inhaling deeply. The Flehmen Response allows lions to detect pheromones and other chemical signals in their environment, which are crucial for various aspects of their lives, including reproduction, territory marking, and social bonding. By analyzing these scents, lions gather important information about the presence and status of other lions and potential prey, enhancing their ability to navigate and survive in the wild.
