The holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, proclaiming the freedom of enslaved people in Texas. This event occurred over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.
