Replying to @Smitty That feeling when you make over $3 million for a company and they give you a T-shirt, pay you just $15/hr, and don’t protect you on the job. 😡 @Waffle House

Honeybees – small but mighty creatures that make life possible. They work together, each with a role, ensuring the survival of their hive. Just like honeybees, workers keep the world running – from transportation to caregiving, from cooking to serving food. During the pandemic, we were called "essential workers" because society depends on us. But like the worker bee, our strength isn’t individual – it’s in our collective power. 💪🏽Our union is our hive. 💪🏽 In the South, we’ve seen decades of resistance to unions. From the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, designed to suppress worker power, to today’s corporate and political efforts to keep us divided, we’ve always had to fight for our rights. But history shows us the way, and workers before us have fought and won. Now, it’s our turn. We’re organizing for: ✅ Fair wages we can build our lives on ✅ Dignity and respect for ALL workers ✅ Safe workplaces free from exploitation If you feel alone or disempowered at work, know this: you’re not alone. It’s time to build our hive. Educate, agitate, and organize. 🚨 Join the movement. Unionize your workplace: 🚨 Sign our petition of universal demands for employers: action.ussw.org/a/demands We won’t be stopped. We won’t be turned around. Together, we are unstoppable. BREAKING: @WaffleHouse announces the “single largest additional investment” of pay raises in the company’s 68-year history after workers go on strike, deliver 13K petitions to corporate HQ, and take collective action demanding the iconic Southern restaurant improve working conditions. CEO Joe Rogers Jr. announced that the tipped wage floor will jump more than $3/hour for 1000’s of workers across the South in a series of raises based on tenure, store location and other factors. Cindy Smith, Waffle House server in Atlanta: “I’ve worked at Waffle House for 30 years and never got even a penny raise. But then I started organizing with my co-workers. We delivered a letter with demands for a better workplace and went on strike to make our demands heard.” But this is just the beginning: “[The raises] aren’t nearly enough. We’re demanding $25/hr... We need 24/7 security stores. And we need the company to stop taking money out of our checks for meals, even when we don’t eat them.” -Katie Giede, server in Atlanta. In the comments on the company video posted online, a worker named Pete wrote, "this is proof striking works...this would have never happened if those ladies hadn't gone on strike!" Sign the petition NOW to let WH know that every worker deserves $25/hr, an end to mandatory meal deductions, and 24/7 security: bit.ly/Smothered-Covered #UnionsforAll #OrganizetheSouth #UnionStrong #Unions #work #WorkerPower #WorkerWin #wafflehouse #wafflehouseworker

🚨 BREAKING: The Union of Southern Service Workers (USSW) is founded! 🚨 USSW is a union built by low wage service workers in the fast food, care, and retail industries across the South. We are coming together across the service industry because this fight is so much bigger than any one employer. We have been excluded from unionization for far too long – so we are taking collective action to shift the balance of power in the South to build our union by any means necessary. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏻 Learn more: www.ussw.org #UnionsforAll #OrganizetheSouth

Today in Southern labor history, we remember the Pittston coal strike of 1990. In the 1980s, Pittston Coal’s profits were declining due to economic factors. To make up their lost profits, the company: 🏥Terminated healthcare for retired miners, 🏥Reduced healthcare coverage for active miners, and ⏰Began running their mines seven days a week without overtime pay. The United Mine Workers of America tried to bargain with the company, but Pittson stayed silent, leaving 1,500 workers without health benefits. On April 5, 1989, 2,000 workers, mainly in Virginia, walked out of the mines and onto the picket line. The UMWA miners were militant in their resistance, setting up non-violent protests and road blockades. However, some striking miners who were not affiliated with the UMWA used more violent tactics to stop the company from breaking the strike. Women within the community organized a solidarity group called The Daughters of Mother Jones which organized money and food donations to the miners. On April 18, 1989, 39 women occupied the Pittston Coal headquarters for 36 hours and shut down coal production for nearly two days. In February 1990, the miners’ tactics brought Pittston Coal to the bargaining table, where they won back health benefits. #OrganizetheSouth #UnionsforAll #LaborHistory #Strike #MiningTikTok #Miner

Being in a union isn’t just about fixing our workplace—it’s about growth, confidence, and leadership. Just ask Jovon Graham, a proud USSW member in SC. Jovon stood with his co-workers, went on strike, and emerged as a strong, confident worker leader. His journey proves that when we stand together, we grow together. Unions build power. Unions build people. 💪 #OrganizetheSouth #UnionsforAll #UnionStrong #Unions #work #WorkerPower #CorporateGreed

When there’s a crisis with eggs, why is the cost immediately pushed onto customers—hurting tipped workers in the process? Waffle House rakes in millions every year—because they underpay their workers, not because of egg prices. Food price fluctuations are the cost of doing business. Workers and customers shouldn’t be the ones footing the bill. If Waffle House can raise prices, they can raise wages. Period. A union is the only way to give Amazon workers a seat at the table for living wages, safety, and dignity on the job. Against the odds, @AmazonCause stood up to demand what they deserve. But Amazon fought back—illegally breaking the law, intimidating workers, and spending thousands to crush our movement. Why? Because they fear our power. We will keep organizing because over half of Amazon workers face food and housing insecurity and we deserve a living wage from a multi-billion dollar corporation. This fight is bigger than Amazon—it’s about workers everywhere. #OrganizeTheSouth #UnionsForAll

Waffle House just introduced an extra 50 cent charge per egg, but guess what? None of it is going to the workers who crack, cook, and serve them every day. Workers like Cindy Smith in ATL are still struggling to make ends meet on low server wages, while Waffle House pockets even more profit. Customers shouldn’t pay more while workers stay underpaid. If Waffle House can raise prices, they can raise wages. Egg prices are up. Worker pay should be too. #OrganizetheSouth #UnionsforAll #UnionStrong #Unions #work #WorkerPower #CorporateGreed #WaffleHouse #WaffleHouseWorker #egg #eggprices

🚨Today, Chick-fil-A worker TaShira Smith WALKED OUT in Durham 🚨 Why? Because she faced retaliation after leaving work early to take her son to the ER. No one should have to choose between their job and their family. 💔 At @Chick-fil-A, workers brave extreme weather to take orders outside—without proper PPE to keep them safe, warm, or dry. That’s not care. That’s exploitation. 💪 Workers like TaShira are standing up to demand: ✅ Respect on the job ✅ Safe working conditions ✅ Fair wages It’s time for fast-food giants like Chick-fil-A to treat workers with dignity. ✊ #OrganizeTheSouth #UnionsForAll #Chickfila #durhamnc #workerpower #work #walkout #strike #fastfood

Today in Southern labor history, we remember the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers’ strike. On February 1, 1968, two Memphis garbage collectors, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, were crushed to death by a malfunctioning truck. Frustrated by the city’s lack of response, low wages, and dangerous working conditions, 1,300 Black men from the Memphis Department of Public Works went on strike. As striking workers carried signs through the streets reading “I Am a Man,” 4,000 National Guardsmen and police called in by the mayor filled up the city’s jails. Just after he addressed the strikers, on April 4th, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in his hotel in Memphis. King's murder created tension throughout the city. President Lyndon Johnson sent in a special negotiator in the tension of the moment, and on April 16th, the City of Memphis agreed to the workers' demands. In the end, it’s solidarity that won the Memphis Sanitation workers’ strike. When working people of all races, genders, and identities stick together and organize public support, they are unstoppable! #UnionsForAll #MLKjr #Memphis #BlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #LaborHistory #OrganizeTheSouth #CivilRights #History #OnThisDay
