Tracking your basal body temperature (BBT) is critical if you want to confirm ovulation from home. This is one critical concept I teach ALL my clients. We need to understand our bodies and our fertile signs. So grab a digital thermometer and upon waking, slowly grab and take your temp… then record this number. First thing I want you to do is just take note of the difference in temp before and after ovulation. So if you ovulated on day 13, typically the next morning you should notice an increase in temp by .5-1 degree. Questions? It’s raw but it’s real 🤍 One of the biggest realizations I had after having my kids was that the feelings I had during my fertility challenges never really go away. DON’T KNOW THE BEST PLACE TO START WITH PRECONCEPTION PLANNING? I got you. 💫 but first, hit follow for more fertility support START HERE 👇🏻 ✔️ labs. I say this all the time but truly it helps guide us on what next steps should be. Some basics should include: LH FSH Estradiol Thyroid panel- TSH, Free T4, Free T3, anti- TPO and anti-TG. Vitamin D Glucose and insulin The KEY here is the interpretation- what do these numbers mean for you and how will you use them to support your fertility! (In my preconception formula program, we tackle all of this) ✔️ We want to focus on reducing inflammation. This could be coming from anywhere- sedentary lifestyle, stress, hormonal imbalances, poor diet, not sleeping, infections, old injuries. We gotta IDENTIFY those areas that could be contributing to increased inflammation… which by the way impacts things like egg and sperm quality and implantation. Once you start to identify the culprits, make it your mission to address it using food, habit changes, and maybe help from someone who has experience with this issue. ✔️ learn about your body. I’ve spoken to countless couples who haven’t yet learned how to track and interpret her cycle. This is a really critical piece of the puzzle. PCOS sisters listen up!! ⬇️ According to the Rotterdam criteria, you need to meet a minimum of 2/3 of the following criteria to be diagnosed with PCOS. 1. Irregular or absent periods 2. Elevated androgen hormones as seen clinically such as male pattern hair growth or in your blood work 3. Polycystic ovaries as seen on ultrasound. If you do fall within this criteria, it’s important to seek out further testing/support to ensure you get a good handle on this condition. WHY? How do you know WHAT to do if you don’t know WHAT the root issue is? One non-negotiable for me is blood work with all my clients. This helps us to understand the main underlying factors of this hormonal condition and that is the key for developing a plan that makes sense for each individual. One key lab I love having tested is fasting insulin. This tells me a lot about the direction we need to go with their plan. Ok so I KNOW what the emotional rollercoaster feels like - if you are TTC, then I know you do too. One minute you have it locked down -you are feeling positive, motivated, and feel like maybe this is THE cycle… And the next minute you are spiralling down into the deep, dark abyss. These highs and lows are like no other. For me, the mental/emotional turmoil of my fertility journey was one of the hardest aspects. I had the nutrition and supplement on point….but mentally I went for a ride. It wasn’t until after my IVF and subsequent ectopic pregnancy that I finally said “enough is enough, I’m done”. I get this question A LOT. So, here’s the quick and dirty ▶️ If you are basal body temperature tracking to help better understand your cycle and ovulation then you can start tracking BBT the first day after your period ends and continue right through (at least for the first few cycles) until you get your period again. You want to make sure you test first thing in the morning- before you move around. This will ensure the most accurate reading. I’m not going to let this slide… In addition to the ones listed in the video, here are a few other tips for picking a protein powder *I should say that you DO NOT have to use a protein powder to be healthy or to get enough protein. 🤍🤍Kidding but not kidding…🤍🤍 Of course there are exceptions to every rule.. if you have PCOS and are celiac or know you don’t feel well after eating gluten then of COURSE you should not be eating it. Have you been at this TTC thing awhile and feel like you have “tried everything”? I hear this often. OF COURSE there are exceptions but for many, IMO, we just need to dig further 😉 And well, keto in the short term could have some benefits, long term it’s not a sustainable option to support your fertility. After 15 years of working 1:1 with clients, I’ve never seen anyone sustain this type of eating…. OK so, protein. We know we need it yet most of us still don’t get enough. How much you need depends on a variety of factors - gender, goals, activity level etc. But an easy start is by aiming for 0.8g protein per kg of body weight…this still isn’t enough IMO but it’s a good start! Protein is really critical - it’s our build and repair macronutrient (think building healthy egg cells 😉) but also for hormone balance, such as insulin. If your insulin is wonky then you will likely have elevated levels of inflammation, other critical sex hormones will likely be impacted - like progesterone - and you will have poor sleep and higher levels of stress/anxiety….the list goes on. So how do I get enough protein for me? I start with a protein heavy breakfast. Like 25g. This often includes 3 -4eggs and collagen powder or a smoothie with protein powder (drop a🤍 in the comments if you want me to send you my favourite plant-based protein powder). Doing this stabilized my blood sugars for the day and sets me up for reduced cravings, more productivity, energy, motivation and a good sleep the next night. Are you part of the 10%? March is Endometriosis Awareness Month… whereby endometrial-like tissue that normally lines the uterus is found outside the uterus. It most notably impacts the ovaries, bowels, and fallopian tubes. Globally 190 million women of reproductive age are impacted. While we know a lot, there is much to still be learned about this condition. That is why bringing awareness to endometriosis is critical. Women with endometriosis can struggle to get and stay pregnant. One of the first steps I take with clients is to show them how to reduce inflammation in the body. Here are 5 simple ways to start to reduce inflammation and better manage your endometriosis. 🥑 consume plenty of plant-based omega 3 fatty acids… also included here are quality fish oils 🥦 colour is key! Seriously. Not only is it good for fertility health but it helps to neutralize oxidative stress caused by factors like stress, poor diet, obesity etc I’m loving my Super Greens: Pineapple Burst by @inenutrition. 3 things to STOP doing if you have PCOS! ⬇️ 1. Test DON’T guess! I make sure to do testing with all my clients to get a baseline understanding of their hormones (and other key blood marker’s) to understand what we are working with. Do you have insulin resistance, elevated androgen hormones? Knowing this helps me help you! If you don’t have any recent testing done it’s time to make that a priority… how else are you supposed to know if what you are doing is helping your labs?? 2. Don’t rely JUST on LH sticks to track ovulation. With PCOS, often LH is elevated which can interfere with getting an accurate read on your fertile window. With elevated LH you can get a constant high read or multiple high LH reads making identifying your window pretty tricky! Instead use CM, BBT and LH sticks to narrow down and confirm your fertile window and ovulation. 3. If it were me, I’d not want to rely on just metformin to regulate me insulin (for those who have insulin- resistant PCOS). There is SOOO much you can do to get a better handle on your insulin. In the short term metformin may be prescribed but long-term, there are options. Consider: ▶️ more protein ▶️ movement ▶️ proper sleep -7-8 hours in darkness ▶️ consuming lots of plant-based fats like avocado and olive oil ▶️ insulin- sensitizing foods like cinnamon added to your diet ▶️ plenty of fiber from foods like lentils and veggies ▶️ possibly supplement support ▶️ keeping stress in check (And more of course) And this is what I do in my mama method fertility program- we measure key PCOS and fertility markers to understand your body then use nutrition, supplements, hormonal- management tactics, mindset, gastrointestinal and inflammation support (and more) to give your body the best shot at conception. I can’t tell you how often I find stuff when I dig…. Stuff like too low or too high critical biomarkers that we know can make a difference in getting and staying pregnant. Take my client Trish for example. In her case we found PCOS, low D and low Ferritin. Her cycles we almost non-existent, she had uncomfortable symptoms like weight gain and acne. We dug into her blood, realized the extent of what was going on and made the appropriate decisions to get her bloods back into a healthier place, resume her periods and help her lose some of that pesky weight. We still have a ways to go, but at least we know we are headed in the right direction. Where should I start! Gut health and fertility is a PASSION of mine- I truly believe that our gut can largely impact the chance of conceiving and staying pregnant. But first. If you don’t, well keeping reading cuz you may just learn a thing or two! 🤗 Research is showing that deviation of normal lactobacilli-dominated vaginal microflora has been associated with reproductive failure and adverse pregnancy outcomes (Verstraelen et al) 🤗 Some studies are also showing that the bacteria in the cavity of a woman’s uterus can play a key role in determining pregnancy outcomes via In Vitro Fertilization (Moreno et al) 🤗 this study shows that recurrent pregnancy loss is associated with abnormal gut permeability (aka leaky gut). Researchers in this study believe that this inflammatory reaction (from leaky gut) could be contributing to RPL. (Tersigni et Al) 🤗 microbiome dysregulation associated with developing inflammatory and autoimmune disease which we know is directly tied to fertility outcomes (Kwa et Al) And that’s just some of it…. So what do we do? There is sooooo much, which is why I have a module in my program dedicated to gut health! So to get you started, consider this ⬇️ ▶️ you are what you eat. If you eat junk- your GI will function like junk ➡️ consume foods that promote gut health like fiber- rich foods (fruits, veggies, lentils, beets), consume foods that encourage healthy intestinal bacteria to grow like kimchi, sauerkraut, and olives ➡️ reduce stress… easier said than done I know! Still not convinced stress doesn’t impact fertility? Then read ⬇️ below. We KNOW stress can impact hormones (including sex hormones), sleep, motivation to perform the tasks that lead to a healthey lifestyle- like movement and clean eating, it can drive up inflammation, disrupt menstrual cycles (and more). But there is no clear consensus as to the direct and exact relationship between stress and fertility issues that we all can agree on. Either way, I think we can all agree that in one way or another stress can impact our health and fertility. And here is another study that suggests this relationship exists! In this prospective cohort study, a total of 401 couples completed the study that found that “higher levels of stress measured by salivary alpha-amylase are associated with longer time-to-pregnancy and increased risk of infertility” * for reference, alpha- amylase is an enzyme secreted in response to stressful events. Teaching my clients to understand your own body and how to track cycles and identify ovulation is one of my first priorities… I want to empower you to take control of those things you have control of when TTC. The good news is that there are many different ways that our body signals to us that ovulation is impending. These include: ✔️ increased sex drive ✔️ positive opk ✔️ ovulation pain ✔️ breast tenderness ✔️ changes in cervical mucus Note: we all are unique so will experience unique symptoms. In being able to hone in on the signs of impending ovulation we can then target our intimate time accordingly…. I mean, I don’t know about you, but after 2 years of TTC, seggs was not something that I wanted to do anymore than absolutely necessary 😅 So that is why identifying your fertile window and doing the deed every other day for 5 days leading up to, plus the day of ovulation will give you the best shot of success. Here are 5 of my favourites!⬇️ Pumpkin Seeds These babies are loaded with zinc. Why should you care? Well, zinc among MANY other things helps to balance hormones (playing a role in important hormonal shifts like menstruation and ovulation), supports the immune system, and plays a vital role in sperm health. Sauerkraut or kimchi Fermented foods are on the top of my list of fertility foods simply for their gut-supporting qualities. Fermented foods can help improve the quantity and quality of bacteria or flora in our intestinal system. Better bacteria equal improved digestion, reduced inflammation, and better blood sugar and hormonal regulation. Mushrooms (and eggs) Vitamin D is a must for most, but definitely for those prepping for pregnancy. Many of us are in fact deficient and therefore require supplementation. However, mushrooms (plant-based) and eggs for those who eat them, are sources of vitamin D that we can get from our diet. Why D? This “sunshine” vitamin helps to balance sex hormones, supports the immune system, and helps to regulate hormones and the menstrual cycle. Brazil nuts Are rich in selenium, another nutrient any woman trying to conceive should be aware of. Just a few Brazil nuts a day can actually top up your levels. Selenium has been found to help promote healthy follicles in the ovaries! Broccoli I’m loving broccoli as it serves multiple purposes. 1. It’s high in fiber, which not only keeps our pipes working properly and feeling good, but the scrubbing action that fiber provides to the intestinal system keeps digestion and inflammation in check. Fiber also helps to remove excess estrogen from the system. 2. Broccoli and other cruciferous veggies like Brussels sprouts and cauliflower are high in indole-3-carbinol (I3C). This compound helps with estrogen metabolism-a hormone when in excess can cause fat gain, irregular periods, and decreased sex drive. Do you have an IVF cycle coming up? Read this ⬇️ In one study, a greater adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet while going through IVF was associated with a higher likelihood of achieving clinical pregnancy and live birth among non-obese women <35 years of age. And in another study, more embryos were obtained via IVF when the participant followed a Mediterranean diet. So what exactly is a Mediterranean Diet? IT IS CHARACTERIZED BY: ✔️daily consumption of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and healthy plant-based fats ✔️weekly intake of poultry, fish, nuts, and beans moderate portions of dairy ✔️limited intake of red meat (And more of course) Juustttt in case you missed it, carbohydrates are ok to eat, and in fact, they are a part of a healthy diet.
