Lateral raises are probably the most butchered movement in the gym.
❌ Stop doing them straight out to the side
❌ Stop "pouring the water out" at the top (this doesn't give more "more side delt".. internal rotation will actually work more posterior delts/traps/triceps)
❌Stop doing the pullback thing that everyone loves to do
❌Stop obsessing about "taking traps completely out of it". Let them do their job
✅Work in the scapular plane
✅"Touch the walls" is a good cue to work OUT and not pull up
✅Get good stability from the ground up
By the way, this isn't to say that you're lateral delts aren't working in the first 2.. it's just not as effective.
And of course, if you have found that doing them in the frontal plane works best for you, go for it (just don't do the internal rotation). This is simply an alternative that is very effective if you have struggled with lateral raises.
