Well, I wrote another little tiny piece for trumpet tonight. An Etude you could call it. I was feeling a little bit silly with this this one and just let my fingers go where they wanted to go when writing with the keyboard in Dorico. But I did discover something; there are indeed some ultra-challenging parts of this little etude. Quite technical tricky things, you might even catch it in the video where I myself had some trouble playing it! I love these kinds of challenges and I welcome it, and I know that with some dedicated practice things that were tricky can sometimes because as smooth as butter. Eventually that is... Brass players, come on and try this one, I would love to hear how you do. Of course, you might want to start a little bit slower, or maybe faster. Do your thing! I've been so busy lately with some very exciting things. Unfortunately though I have not had the time to upload regularly to this channel. But we're gonna try again. I thought to get things really going again I would share this favorite Arban song of mine, 'My Pretty Jane'. The movement in this piece and lyrical demands make it a little more challenging to play than one would think. I find this to be a great piece to play at any time of the day. Warm-ups, warm-downs, or right in the middle of all the chaos. This piece brings me back to center, on what really matters in music the most. What is that you ask? I dare not answer that question fully, for you will get as many answers as there are questions. But personally, it seems to me that expression and emotion are core elements of what is inside of 'music', if not fully defined by it. Recently I resurrected the Flight of the Bumblebee out of some mild curiosity. I wondered - has my recent improvements in speed keyboard typing (getting 100 wpm+ scores now) improved my execution of 'Flight of the Bumblebee' by Rimsky Korsakov. This piece is difficult for trumpet because it demands rapid succession of some particularly awkward fingerings. But to my amazement, after not looking this piece a glance for years, I was able to pick up this intro line and within minutes get it faster than I ever had before. I made a little exercise to break it down in multiple keys and speeds. Yes, this happened to me last week. and Yes, it is awful. The only thing that heals chapped lips is time, and it takes forever. Playing well with chapped lips is near impossible. This is a note to self, as well as a recommendation to all trumpet players. Drink plenty of water, or diet soda, or whatever you want. I often get asked about my first notes of the day. My warm-up starts with long tones, beginning softly on a Low C to get everything flowing. Then, I incorporate gentle pitch bends, easing into it without pushing too hard. For me, it’s all about being kind to myself in that first warm-up.
