Did you know that Leeds almost had an underground tram network? 🤯 Drawings of a hidden subway station at City Square show what could have been… 👀 Back in the 1940s planning was accepted for an entire subway system under Leeds city centre, hoping to solve Leeds’ long-term transport problems at the time. Almost half a million people were passing through the centre, leading to heavy congestion Trams were already in Leeds by the time plans were drawn up, however this scheme would’ve diverted the overground tram system to below the surface 🫨 Plans appear to show tramlines extending all the way from Woodhouse Lane to Wellington Street and North Lane to Marsh Lane. One line was set to circle the city centre - stopping at some classic Leeds locations like Briggate, the Corn Exchange and of course City Square. The plans fell through due to the change in government and economic struggles of the time, shortly after the second world war.
