We’ve studied humpback whales for years, but there’s still so much we don’t know about their behaviors. By observing them, scientists have made educated guesses about the reasons behind their many surface behaviors—many of which you’ll witness on a Whale Watch: 🌬 Blow – The most common sighting! Whales exhale forcefully, clearing seawater from their blowhole. The mist can be seen for miles. 🐋 Fluke Up/Down Dives – A fluke-up dive is a shallower descent, while a fluke-down dive shows less of the tail and may indicate a deeper dive. 🖐 Pectoral Slap – Whales lie on their side or back and slap the water with their long pectoral fins—possibly for communication or play. 🐳 Tail Slap – Sitting vertically in the water, they slap their flukes repeatedly against the surface, creating a loud splash. 👀 Spy Hop – The whale slowly rises out of the water, head first, as if taking a curious look around above the surface. ⚡ Peduncle Throw – One of the most powerful whale moves, this is when the lower half of the body is forcefully thrown sideways across the water. 🚀 Breach – The grand finale! A whale launches most of its body out of the water, twisting and crashing back down with an epic splash. Which have you yet to see?
