I always say that ignorance and misunderstanding are the cause of the majority of conflicts in the world. I don’t think people realize what the average standard of living is across the globe, and it’s lower than you might expect. Even with the massive economic growth of China and India in the last decade or two, the average income for the world would be living on about $18,000 in the US. So, if you’re making more than that, you have an above-average living standard in the world. One of the most beautiful things about Chinese is a result of not having an alphabet. Because there is no alphabet, there is a soft limit on how many individual words can exist, and so they combine words to make new words instead of inventing individual words. In my opinion, this shows a lot about how Chinese people think about certain ideas, because language affects how we see the world. For the words “psychology,” the Chinese say “心理学” (xin1 li3 xue2) which literally means the study of what’s in the heart. If I didn’t already speak Indonesian, hearing an Indonesian order eggs would be really strange.
