Messages like this are my reminder of important it is to create content about healthcare disparities!
In the United States, a patient's race used to be taken into account in the evaluation of their kidney disease.
For Black patients a multiplier was added to the Glomerular Filtration Rate that increased a patient's GFR.
Studies showed that the calculation potentially overestimated GFR in some patients, making it less likely for treatments to be recommended to Black patients as compared non-Black patients.
One study estimated that 3.3 million more Black Americans would have been diagnosed with a higher stage of chronic kidney disease.
Thankfully, a new equation has now been created AND as of January 2023 if you were a Black patient that had the race adjusted GFR equation, you have the potential to now have your wait-time adjusted. #racialbiasinmedicine #healthcare #joelbervell #medicine #doctor #healthequity #series #publichealh #stem #gfr #kidney #hiddenhistory #stem

I’m sharing clips from my interview with Kelly Clarkson that I think were impactful! Here’s Kelly introducing me, and a story about cyanosis, a condition where the skin turns blue, and how that led me to start posting on TikTok to amplify disparities that I was seeing in medical school. #joelbervell #medicalmythbuster #kellyclarkson #kellyclarksonshow

·2024-3-27Representation Matters in Medicine. @visualdx created a catalogue of conditions for skin of color and it makes it easier for medical professionals to determine conditions on darker skin. #dermatology #acanthosisnigricans #skin #skincare #derm

·2022-12-6I'm bringing back my favorite series for Black History month: "Woke Black History!" Every day in February we'll be diving into Black activists, changemakers and world leaders who have made a significant impact, but whose names you may not have heard of. But why the word "woke?" Over the past few years, the word "woke" has been co-opted by some as an insult. But the phrase originated from AAVE starting in 1962, and was used within Black communities and social justice communities to call for an awareness i.e. to stay woke. I think it's important to recognize the history and people that have led us to today, including the words that have been co-opted for negative purposes; especially amidst the increasing assault on Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and claims that the federal government won’t celebrate BHM. Tune in and drop who you want me to talk about below! #joelbervell #medicalmythbuster #wokeblackhistory #blackhistorymonth #wetheculture

·3h ago Today I returned to Yale for the first time in years to speak at the annual Yale Black Solidarity Conference! I was so honored to be part of a space that celebrates Black excellence, resilience, and solidarity. I had the privilege of speaking on a panel about The Black Renaissance in STEM: Breaking Barriers and Shaping the Future, discussing the importance of representation, innovation, and pushing boundaries in science and medicine. Being back on campus, reconnecting with students, and sharing my journey in medicine and advocacy was truly special. Grateful for the opportunity to uplift and inspire the next generation of changemakers! #yale #blackexcellence #conference

·12h ago Yesterday, I posted about RFK Jr.’s disturbing history of pushing rcst health myths. Today, he was asked about it directly during his nomination hearing—and instead of correcting himself, he doubled down. RFK has claimed Black and White people should follow different vaccine schedules because Black peopel have better immune systems. And pushed the conspiracy that COVID-19 was designed to spare certain racial groups. These aren’t just bizarre statements, they’re false, dangerous, and rooted in myths about race that have fueled medical discrimination for decades.

·1d ago Hey Hillman! Ever wondered what it’s like being in medical school? This is the course for you! Welcome to Intro to Medical School 101, where you’ll get a crash course on concepts like anatomy, pathophysiology, and biochemistry and learn about the cardiovascular system, pulmonary system, and so much more. It would be impossible to teach all of medical school in just a semester, so I’ll be organizing this based on organ systems and teaching the concepts I think everyone should know about major body systems! @HillmanTok Univeristy #tiktokuniversity #africanamerican #hillmantok #drbarlow

·2d ago RFK Jr.'s confirmation hearing was hard to watch. His anti-vccne stance is bad enough, but his history of pushing racist and scientifically false claims about health is just as bad. Let’s talk about it!
