The Parsha of Ki Teitzei brings to light a seemingly contradictory mitzvah that requires the Jewish people to remember the atrocities committed by Amalek against them during their journey in the desert. Interestingly, this commandment is likened to the commandment of remembering Shabbos. While remembering Shabbos brings about a sense of joy and love for the Torah and Mitzvos, remembering Amalek and the commandment to destroy them brings about a sense of punishment. However, both forms of remembrance serve to humble us. When we feel on top of the world, we must remember that there is always room for improvement. And when we feel like we have no way to return, we must remember the greatness of G-d and that there is always a way back.

However, a tree is not just another creation. It is often compared to a person, as both have roots, and bodies and produce fruit. Interestingly, there are many similarities between the development of a tree and a person's spiritual development. Just as a tree's body grows constantly, a person's trunk, branches, and leaves should also grow through acts of goodness and kindness. The fruit of a tree symbolizes a person's positive influence on others to do good things. When someone inspires others to do a good deed, they help them grow their tree just as a fruit contains seeds from which another tree can be planted. Giving gelt (Yiddish for money) on Chanukah is an age-old tradition that teaches valuable lessons! The Greeks did not want to destroy the Jewish people, they wanted to banish the Jewish Spirit, of uplifting the mundane to holiness. They believed that the world was created for egotistical and ung-dly pleasures. For oil to be considered holy, was unfathomable, hence the desecration. Gelt an item used daily, is a very physical item. However, when charity is donated, the gelt is transformed and elevated, reminding us of the meaning of Chanukah. Chanukah is the celebration of the miracle of light. Kislev, the Hebrew month in which Chanukah falls, is the coldest and darkest month of the year. Each person holds a spark within that illuminates the world through acts of kindness and good deeds.
