Today is Young Carers Action Day. Organised by the @carerstrust the theme for this year is 'Give me a break!' - a theme which is particularly close to our hearts. There are around one million young carers aged 17 or under in the UK. Caring for a family member can have a huge impact on a child's mental health and wellbeing, as well as their ability to learn and future life chances. Shockingly, 50,000 young carers are spending as many as 50 hours a week on their caring role. Many feel overwhelmed by the level of responsibility. * Here at Honeypot we organise respite breaks and other wrap round services for young carers aged 5-12. At one of our three Honeypot Houses in England, Wales and Scotland children come and have the most fantastic breaks enjoying all kinds of fun activities. As well as having a fun filled time they are able to meet other young carers, sharing their stories, and feeling less isolated as they make new friends. The children absolutely love coming to Honeypot for a break and we love to see them making memories to last a lifetime. Happy World Book Day! Here at Honeypot we know how important books and reading for pleasure are, particularly for young carers who often experience feelings of isolation and loneliness. Books offer a doorway to other worlds and help children to process their emotions. Before children arrive for one of our Respite weekends we prepare the beds with teddys and books to welcome them when they arrive. Every Honeypot House has a library filled with a variety of fiction and non fiction books to suit all interests.
