feeding the blind Betta boyz with their new fancy contraption ✨ and yes Bugsby does have what appears to be Popeye! it hasn't changed much since I've adopted him, but I'm keeping an eye on him to make sure it doesn't develop any further/get infected. Popeye is usually due to some sort of infection causing inflammation to the eyes which swell/pop out. CW: lamb wet specimen I'm so stoked I was able to film the last part of the preservation process on this little buddy! I completely forgot to film the first part, but he was initially fixed in 10% buffered formalin for ~4 weeks, then put into a DI water bath to remove the excess formalin before being stored in his final jar in 70% isopropyl alcohol. With a specimen this large, there will be quite a bit of discoloration to the alcohol as bodily fluids continue to leech out, so the alcohol will need to be changed a few times over the first year (which is 2 gallons of alcohol every time 🙈) If you're curious about how to do this yourself, check out my wet specimen playlist or the resources in my bio for a written tutorial! #specimen #wetspecimen #oddities #odditiesandcuriosities #fluidpreservation #lamb #farming #animals #science #biology

Going on a sea slug hunting trip 🤠 It's been so long since I've been able to do this since I moved away from the Oregon coast, but luckily it's not too far away! Melibe leonina (the hooded nudibranch) has a wide range along the west coast, but historically has been seen very rarely along the Oregon coast with less than 10 documented sightings until last year. It's incredibly exciting that they have seem to have established a colony in the Yaquina Bay and I hope to see them next year! This species is very seasonal and has a short lifespan of around a year. In the fall, they congregate to spawn and then their bodies are recycled into nutrients for the sea. A fun fact about this species is that the have a very unique and strong smell that in my opinion resembles a mix of sandalwood and watermelon jolly ranchers. #marinebiology #ocean #sealife #seaslug #nudibranch #melibe #science #beach #pnw #animals #nature #learnontiktok
