Come with me as I take a little solo adventure. I have spent eons sharing hoop related vids so sometimes it is fun to take a break and share some other parts of my life. To be honest, hooping & hoop life, really took over as a super-hyper-fixation there for a good decade or more and so I’m off on a playcation to reclaim myself. I have received a few messages saying that you would love to come to the live (online) EMBODY workshop this weekend but you are feeling too nervous or uncomfortable to be seen on Zoom. I hear you. I feel you. A gentle suggestion to...allow yourself to be guided. Camera off. Hoop on. Gift yourself the space to begin to trust yourself. You might be surprised to know that I am not a naturally confident person. I am deeply introverted and swim in doubt often. It takes enormous preparation for me to show up online or in person. But I do it scared, because I deeply believe that having the capacity to guide movement and embodiment is a gift. And so I bring my nerves, my doubt and my fear to the space. I welcome them in and let them float me. Confidence is not a naturally occurring state. It is courage on repeat. The willingness to try something. Each small step softens the doubt. Every attempt at something decreases resistance. Building trust in yourself with each courageous step, no matter how big or small, this is where growth resides. Sometimes we have to show up scared and try it anyway. If you choose to keep your camera off for the whole workshop that is totally fine. Allow yourself to be connected with the space, the music, the hoop community and my guidance but without the pressure of feeling like you need to be witnessed EMBODY workshop is about finding YOUR space in ways that feel safe, creative and supportive for YOU. Isn’t the whole idea of hooping to gather as many tricks as you can? Why would I want to restrict them? Tricks are incredible, exciting, challenging and expansive. They are just one part of the art of hooping. There are many other layers to freedom with a hoop; including technique, somatic release, transitions, creativity, personal expression, pace and posture. A huge misconception is that you need to know a lot of tricks before you can access a state of flow. Fake news. Deep flow states can be accessed from the very beginning of your time with a hoop; simply via waist hooping or hand spins, even simply holding your hoop and moving your body with focussed intention. Flow is synonymous with focus and release so whether you have developed a wide array of tricks or you have only learned one or two you still have the ability to access flow. I personally practice “trick restriction” by simply concentrating on one trick or one hand position I am able to free up all other pathways and release any blockages to a flow state. I highly recommend it to any hoopers nudging up against the flow blocks of anxiety, apathy or boredom with their practice. Recommedation: Try Trick Restriction 1 – 10 mins at the beginning of your hoop practice to warm up creative movement patterns, allow relaxation of thought, and as a freedom technique then take the sensations into your regular practice time. What size hoop(s) do you use the most? Where did you get them from? Drop your suggestions in the comments for other hoopers to peep and get inspiration. Yes hoop size does matter. Many of us have a story about picking up a kiddies hoop and thinking that we couldn’t hoop, only to find out that a different size offers different feelings and access to tricks. If you are new to hooping as an adult, starting with the foundations of on body and off body you will likely want a large hoop to begin with as it allows space and feeling ideal for learning. The general rule was to measure from floor to belly button but that is not entirely inclusive as we all have uniquely sized bodies, we need uniquely sized hoops. Find a hoop maker in your area an speak to them directly if you are unsure. Here are the 3 sizes I have most commonly hooped with over the last 15 years. Hoop size is a personal preference, finding what feels good for your body is the perfect way. 95cm/37” diameter in 3/4” HDPE hoop for learning all the foundations and flowing with freedom 90cm/34” diameter in 3/4” polypro have been my go to for a sweet spot in size that allows me to seemlessly flow on and off body. 75cm/29” diameter in 5/8” polypro tubing is super fun for twins and off body tricks I recently bought a 100cm/39” diameter 3/4” polypro and I absolutely love the space and freedom in gives me to explore a new range of movement with on body hooping. Ok you wanna unlock flowing leg hooping? It’s not about your knees. Shift the focus to your hips and posture by adding these 3 moves into your practice and playtime. 1. Lunges. Choose your own adventure. Release, lengthen and strengthen all the muscles and fascia needed for smooth leg hooping. 2. Pigeon Pose. Go deep, stay for a while. Nourish yourself by modifying to suit your energy. Really want to get connective tissues juiced up? Melt into pigeon pose on each side for a 3 or more minutes. Soften. 3. Crossed leg forward fold. Are you trying to think yourself out of overthinking? In an act of trust can you allow yourself to fall into motion. Neither forcing nor mentally preparing for your next move. Simply allowing yourself to float in, to bathe in, to surrender to the movement of this moment. This is where true release begins and trying ends. A deep surrender to authentic flow. This is beyond the mind. Often the hardest part of playful practice is making your way to the practice. Happy Full Moon 🌕 Over the past year I have been sharing questions and movement prompts on the new and full moon. A deep part of me truly knows we don’t need more questions, more answers to search for, more overthinking, trying to work it all out. Peace and presence is not the outcome of a racing mind. Deep knowing, inner wisdom comes from a body in nourishing, flowing motion. Its embrace more warmly felt by a healed and regulated nervous system…that can never come from a place of rush, force, grasping. Uncovering treasures comes when we dance with this very moment; unhooking ourselves from dragging in of the past or hustling for a bigger, better, faster, harder future. So I don’t have anymore questions for you that you need to answer. You already know all of the answers. I am here to dance beside you as you bask in them. Oh wait…I do have a question for you. Where do we go when anger, frustration, challenge, pain, confusion arises? How do we transmute the prickliness and racing hearts? The final Full Moon of 2022 is nearing. We are in the slipstream of this calendar year wrapping up but for some of us we are feeling snagged by frustration, illness, breakdowns, breakups, break through. I sobbed through the last half of yoga today. The wringing out of stored rage, deep sadness, choking frustration trapped in my hips and organs. I am not this body I am not these thoughts We are reminded over and over again that movement and freedom of expression are the medicine. Thank you so very much for your loving kindness and responses to my last post. It seemed so trivial to make comment about holding shame within my body. And yet the insurmountable tension and trauma that many of us carry within our bodies is not trivial; it is real, it is heavy, it is dense and complex. It is not ours to hold and yet we are the ones that need to do the work, the release, the clearing and healing. This is why we move. This is how we move it.
