In contentious questioning during Pete Hegseth's confirmation hearing to be secretary of defense Tuesday, Sen. Tim Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, repeatedly asked Hegseth about his relationship history, pointing to his three marriages and public admission of infidelity. "Can you so casually cheat on a second wife?" Kaine said, asking Hegseth about the timing of the October 2017 allegation of sexual assault that Hegseth says was a consensual encounter. Hegseth did not directly answer the question, frequently referring to the senator's questions as hypotheticals. #news #politics #congress #military #trump #virginia

Between the removal of Rep. Al Green (D-TX), a Republican snatching a Democrat's sign and walk-outs staged by Democratic lawmakers, President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress was filled with drama. CBS News' Scott MacFarlane says there "was a horribly tense feeling in this chamber" throughout the 100-minute speech. #news #Trump #politics #Republican #Democrat #Congress #House

During his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, President Trump stated there is nothing he could do or say to make Democrats "happy or to make them stand or smile or applaud." He then asked them, "for just this one night," to join Republicans in "celebrating so many incredible wins for America." #news #Trump #Congress #politics #Democrat #Republican

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) told reporters that he was "willing to suffer whatever punishment is available to me" after he was escorted from President Trump's joint address to Congress for shouting in protest. "I'm not fighting the punishment," Green said. "This is about the people who are being punished by virtue of losing their health care. This is the richest country in the world, and we have people who don't have good health care. We've got to do better and now we're about to cut Medicaid, which is for poor." #news #politics #algreen #texas #trump #congress

SpaceX launched its huge Starship rocket on the program's eighth test flight Thursday, but a malfunction of some sort triggered multiple upper stage engine shutdowns and the vehicle failed to reach its planned sub-orbital altitude, breaking apart in a spectacular shower of debris. It was the second failure in a row for a Starship upper stage, a vehicle critical to NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon in the next few years. #news #spacex #rocket #spacexlaunch

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told reporters Thursday morning that "not one" business in his state has said they want President Trump's tariffs on major U.S. trading partners. He cited Kentucky's bourbon industry as one particular concern and said he hoped the tariffs "will not cause a recession." Paul spoke hours before Trump said he will pause 25% tariffs on U.S. imports from Mexico and Canada that are covered under a 2020 trade agreement, delaying levies imposed on the nations earlier this week. #kentucky #paul #tariffs #bourbon

"We don't hate the American people." Freddy, a factory worker at Laval Industries in Windsor, Canada, which makes parts for American-manufactured cars and molds for American bathtubs and showers, said that while millions of Canadians will be hurt by the trade war, "it has nothing to do with the American people." He spoke with CBS News' Lana Zak a day before Trump announced that he would pause tariffs on U.S. imports from Canada that are covered under a 2020 trade agreement. #canada #trump #usa

President Trump is expected to issue an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to start the process of dissolving the Education Department, sources tell CBS News, although the timing of such a move is unclear. Hours after McMahon was confirmed by the Senate, she issued a memo with the subject line “Our Department’s Final Mission.” The memo said “this is our opportunity to perform one final, unforgettable public service to future generations of students. I hope you will join me in ensuring that when our final mission is complete; we will be able to say that we left American education freer, stronger, and with more hope for the future.” Completely eliminating the department would require congressional approval and 60 votes in the Senate, which is unlikely given the current makeup. The Trump administration's pause on intelligence-sharing with Ukraine is "a shakedown" for the country's mineral rights, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) tells CBS News' Nikole Killion. "This is antithetical to our national security interests, to our history, to our legacy of supporting democracies. It is a mistake of historic proportions, and it's going to mean that our allies around the world can't trust the United States anymore," Schiff says. #news #politics #congress #ukraine #trump
