We’ve had a broody hen who has been sitting on eggs for over 3 weeks. Unfortunately her eggs were non viable but we wanted to make sure she got something for all of her hard work! We picked up 3 Hatchery’s Choice Banty chicks from Russel Feed and placed them under at night. This morning she woke up and has accepted all three chicks! Any guess as to what they are ? Sunday dinner didn’t disappoint. Using some fabulous finds from the @Davis Porch & Patio 2nd Anniversary Celebration Market I was able to put together a fresh, clean dinner sandwich with no junk ingredients 🥪 I made our Signature loaf with organic chicken breast battered in a spice mix including Finch + Fennel. Needed a Carpenter’s Daughter Bow knife for slicing and O.Leavoil Tzatziki for a huge pack of flavor. Wife me, but not really. Just out here living my best life making sure the homestead is hunkered down for the next few days🥶 I depend on the land and my animals to provide so it’s my job to prep them and make sure they are comfortable and my *cold hardy*crops have a fighting chance. Where do you shop for eggs? Do you know what you’re buying and how it’s being produced? Battery Hens are typically confined in a metal cage for 1-2years and lay an egg almost every single day from the ultra high protein feed they are given. They will peck at each other from stress or boredom pulling feathers out and never get to see daylight or grass. My battery hens didn’t even know how to “scratch” in the grass. They had to learn how to “chicken”. If you can, buy locally and support your small farm egg dealers and ethical practices. Today was a big day for Springtown. Non-Profit Love Weatherford ventured North for the first official Springtown Clean Up Day. 20 volunteers of all ages joined in to pick up 47 bags of litter in less than 2 hours. Long time locals and new members from out of state as far as Georgia and Colorado worked together to accomplish this big job. Thanks to the equipment brought in from LW and the trashbags donated by the City of Springtown we were all able to work together to help keep our town maintain it’s small town charm. this is just a small seed planted for great things coming to Springtown. We hope to make this a monthly occurrence and that you will join us next time. Boy did we get lucky. Tragedy almost hit our little flock. Something ripped off the bottom board to the door and drug our rooster out. Brownie manage to get high enough to get away. When I tell you this rooster has been through it! This is his 4th or 5th near death experience. If you’re going to be dumb, you better be tough! Bless him! I’m going to reinforce that door. Huge day at the homestead. My body is beat! Cleaned up beds, planted kale, brocolli, spinach, red lettuce, green lettuce, spinach, onions, carrots, arugula, transplanted elephant garlic, mended fences, cleaned the coops and runs, burned some brush, fixed a gate and finally went in when the sun went down! I’ll go into more detail in another post about what I’m planting, regenerative gardening and what you can hope to see at the farmers market!
